When I tore the engine down, I noticed most of the lifters had the oil inlet down, but some were up. However I thought I'd ask which way is the best way for them to go. Here's a pic of what I'm referring to:

In the pic, you see one with the oil inlet exposed to the camera. The other lifter has it pointing down.

My gut feeling is the hole should go down but obviously, if the factor installed some up and some down, it can't matters all that much...but I thought it would still make for a good discussion.

BTW, I just find it is neat that the lifter creates enough of a seal in its bore to allow oil pressure from the pump to pressurize that area between the machined surfaces, push oil into that hole, up the pushrod, and onto the rocker x16.

Doesn't matter. They can go either way.

It's called hydraulics :)

Hole position doesn't matter. The area between the two raised areas becomes a chamber with pressurized oil that then feeds that hole.

In that case, I'll put all the holes UP.

you did keep track of your lifter order correct? as they said, it doesn't matter up/down, but lifters do "seat in" to their bore in the block. if you're not putting new ones in, best to use them in the same order as they were before. Which I'm sure you know already, but just a reminder :)

I was going to do that until I heard that keeping order wasn't important with roller lifters. So no. They are all in a box and I have zero clue which goes in what bore. I probably should've done that but as it turns out, this is not even the original block they came out of. This is an 87 YYY block. The original Explorer block was an XXX block. So given I've swapped blocks and cams, I don't know that order could matter at all.

I never kept track of the order the lifters were in...

if it's a different block it won't matter. It probably doesn't matter even if it's same block, but it doesn't hurt either. If it's flat tappet lifters, you absolutely have to keep track if you're doing a rebuild, and you always want to install new lifters with new cam. As I grew up doing rebuilds with flat tappet, I keep my rollers in order out of force of habbit.
