BE and LC-1 comm ports switching

Post by firemanwill28 » Fri Mar 19, 2010 11:32 pm

I've been using my LC-1 with BE for a while and really like the datalog function for my AFR's. My only problems is the LC-1 switches between comm ports 4 and 5, which requires me to change it in the hardware tab before I can start datalogging. Is there a way to keep the LC-1 in the same comm port or a setting I need to adjust in BE?

Assuming you are using a USB-to-232 adapter, what's most likely happening is you are plugging the adapter into different USB ports each time you connect. To the computer, you are connecting different USB devices. I don't know if that's a stupidity on Windows part or the USB protocol. Regardless, what you can do is go to your Device Manager (right click My Computer, go to Properties, go to Hardware Tab, click Device Manager button), then find your COM port in the COM Port listings. Decide which COM port # you want, and connect the adapter into all ports. Each time it comes up as a different COM port number, open the hardware up (double-click or right-click and go to properties), and keep drilling into those settings to find a drop-down that has the COM port number. Choose the number you want it to be, even if it says it is already being used by another device. Once you go through all the combinations of USB ports it can be connected to and have them set to all be the same COM number, then you are done.

This should work for any USB device that shows up as a COM port.

Note to Moates Quarterhorse users, the latest QH driver in BE should NOT create a COM port for the QH anymore. If you are still seeing a COM port being created when you connect the QH, then you are using an older driver. Update the Quarterhorse driver on the Quarterhorse device down in the USB Hardware section on the Device Manager...not the COM port.

The DataQ will still create a USB component and a COM port component, although there is a new driver for the DataQ available on the DataQ website (v3.36) which I find MUCH more stable than the older drivers. So if you are having trouble with the DataQ dropping out or acting buggy, try updating the driver.

I was infact switching the USB ports when using my laptop. I'm now more attentive to where I plug the USB ports in and now don't get the errors.

Thanks again
