Problems getting my Tweecer to work with the new software

Post by Reed » Mon Apr 27, 2015 4:21 pm

Vehicle- 89 Ford Van, running an EEC-IV A9L, Tweecer RT, MAF conversion on a 351 HO motor.

I was recently able to install the new calcon/caledit software on a newer laptop so I can get back to tuning my van with the Tweecer. However, I think I hard a hardware fault with the Tweecer.

Initially after install, I was able to read and write to the Tweecer with the Twecer off the car. I was able to pull my old tune from the Tweecer unit, but it took some doing the first five or so times I tried to communicate with the Tweecer, Caledit said that there was no Tweecer connected, even though there was. I was finally able to communicate with the Tweecer by hooking the USB cable up with the five position switch disconnected. Once that was done, the computer would recognize the Tweecer and then I could plug in the 5 position switch. I was also able to read the stock calibration from the EEC one time.

However, when I reinstalled the Tweecer in the van and went to try a datalogging run, the laptop would no longer communicate with the Twecer or the EEC and every time I tried to read the Tweecer, read the EEC, write a payload for datalogging, or write to the Tweecer, Caledit would freeze. I had to force quit out of Caledit. I was never able to communicate with the Tweecer with the Tweecer installed in the vehicle.

The freezing of Caledit and the problems communicating with the Tweecer suggest to me that there is a hardware fault in the Tweecer. I
purchased it used so I don't know its full service history, but I have been careful with it since I bought it back in 2010. Unfortunately, in
a van the EEC is mounted in the front passenger footwell. The Tweecer is, therefore, installed in an exposed location right where the front
passenger's feet can kick it. This has happened several times and the Tweecer has even been disconnected from the EEC while I was driving. I eventually taped it firmly in place, but I am concerned that damage might have been done prior to the tape being applied.

Does this sound like a possible hardware fault? Is there anything I can check? Any input is greatly appreciated. Please bear in mind I am not
very computer-savvy and the extent of my electronics ability is hooking up a car stereo.

Thanks.

your problems may be with caledit. I have two rt's both of which I got used and both have worked well. I never could get caledit to work properly so I got BE, no major issues and the customer service was great. I am still using BE2009 although I did acquire a dongle thingy and a Moates....but if it aint broke why fix it, yet :)

Got it. I will try a different software package and see if that helps. This is frustrating because the old version of CalEdit worked just fine.

If you are tuning a GUFB/A9L, I don't know that CalEdit/CalCon have ever been accurate or complete. I haven't looked at the latest version of CalEdit so I can't speak to its quality. I switched to using BinaryEditor long ago when BinaryEditor first gave me that option. Then a few years after, I replaced the TwEECer for the Moates QH.

So I haven't had a need to use CalEdit in quite some time. But what I do remember about the version of CalEdit/CalCon I did use is there were lots of problems and shortcomings as it relates to the 3 GUFx defs. There were lots of payload items missing that I wanted/needed. Some payload items were being calculated/converted wrong. And some of the major controls in CalEdit were labeled wrong for GUFB (labeled as A9L in CalEdit). The one I remember most was the Sealevel, Alt, and Base spark tables were all labeled wrong. I think even the PID names were wrong. And since CalEdit's def files were encoded, you couldn't modify or add to them as things like this were identified. And emailing the owner wasn't usually helpful either. Again this is my recollection from 8-9 years ago. I don't know the state of STKR's software and customer service today.

Thanks. I have not had the time to get really in depth with my tuning. Plus, my engine is fairly close to stock so I only am interested in adjusting things like the engine displacement and the MAF curve. I mainly have a Tweecer since I put a 351 with a MAF based sequential injection system in a van that was originally a 302 with a speed density based system. Aside from the displacement (357 c.i.) and cam profile (again, nothing aggressive) the 351 is stock. All I really need is a tuning device that lets me change very basic parameters, nothing too fancy or in depth.

I will get BinaryEditor and try again. Thanks.
