Hello, everyone!
I am trying to decide on what ECU would be easiest for me to use for my new build. It’s a ‘84 Mustang SVO, that is keeping the lima 2.3 turbo engine and t5 transmission. Since the PE/LA3 ECU’s are very outdated by now, I was looking for a better option (I just recently realized the PE/LA3 computers only had 2 injector outputs).
I currently have BE with a dongle, as well as a Moates quarterhorse. So that will be what I intend to tune with.
What I want out of the new ECU:
Sequential Fuel Injection
ECU Fan Control
OBD-II (EEC-V)
EDIS
MAF
I would love to have coil on plug instead of wastespark/coil pack, but my understanding is that doing so on a 4 cylinder with a Ford ECU is not possible at the moment.
I don’t NEED OBD-II, but I like the idea of having it. I realize it’s more wiring and more hassle than it’s probably worth.
After doing some poking around on EFIDynoTuning and EECTuning, I have seen the CBAZA/EDIS - A4A1/A4A2 setup. I have also seen VRISTANG post about his old 2.3 car that he converted over to CBAZA and then to CZAJL with EDIS.
I believe LOWRANGER96 is using the ’98 Ranger FLH2/PAAD6 setup. But I have seen decipha post about some crossfire issues he had tuning this ecu, and that it uses 2 coil packs. My setup will be using a single plug head, so I am looking to only use one coil pack.
What I already have engine management hardware wise:
-‘05+ Ford Slot MAF
-EDIS-4 Module
-36-1 Crank Wheel and VR Sensor (OE obd2 ranger setup)
-’94 Cali Ranger Hall Effect CID/Cam Sensor
-Ability to run a VR CID/Cam Sensor
-Multiple EEC-IV and EEC-V Engine Wiring Harnesses
From a hardware standpoint, it would be easiest for me to run the obd2 ranger 36-1 crank wheel, and the hall effect cam sensor. These would require little modification that would still give me what I want. If I had to run a VR CID/Cam sensor, it wouldn’t be that hard for me to make that work.
Last weekend I was in the junkyard searching for the EDIS-4 module. I found a few ‘91-‘95 Escorts that had them so I grabbed one along with the complete engine harness. While in the junkyard, I started thinking about ‘96+ Escorts and the fact that they are OBD-II. So I did a little digging and looked into them. It seems the ’96-’97 SOHC Escorts have everything I am looking for. OBDII/EEC-V, EDIS built into the ECU, Hi/Lo fan control, sequential, and MAF.
Perhaps I am overlooking something, but is there a reason the Escort ECU wouldn’t be a viable option? I haven’t looked too deeply into it yet (thinking about contacting sailorbob), but is there a strategy available? What little searching I have done has come up with the ’98 Escort being GRAK8 strategy? Only reason I like this setup over the CBAZA/EDIS is because of the EDIS being onboard the Escort ECU (and the escort ecu’s are plentiful in the junkyard, as well as the harness, which makes them dirt cheap).
From what little research I have done, the ‘98+ Escorts had a PWM returnless fuel pump setup, which I will need to stay return style. I am not sure if that can be changed in the tune on these ECU’s, so that is why I keep saying ‘96/’97 for my year range. Looking at a schematic, the ’97 has IMRC, and ‘98/’99 have IMRC and knock sensor. I believe I can use the IMRC as another analog input to log with? And I like the idea of having a knock sensor just as another thing to play with.
Granted, the CBAZA is rather appealing for the option to control 4R70W and AODE, but for now the car will remain with a T5. I would doubt the Escort ECU could control a RWD automatic trans? Maybe I am wrong?
Please correct me if anything I have wrote above is wrong. I am mainly posting this up for some more information on the Escort strategy and wondering what other people think about it. Feel free to chime in as I am open to thoughts and ideas. Mainly posted this up just to see what people thought.

I emailed sailorbob and he said he does not have any EEC-V 4 cylinder definitions. But he did give me the idea to try it with CDAN 4. Setting up the tune for a 4 cylinder. So I plan to give that a shot and see what happens.
