Add on Traction control??

Post by tvsn94 » Wed Jul 20, 2016 8:12 am

I have been researching traction control systems and seem to be coming up short. are there any systems that will control wheel spin without breaking a turbo motor?
It appeared the Racelogic system would be the ticket but they no longer sell them, and no reason why.
Seems that reading the ABS wheel sensors and being able to adjust slip would work. as for pulling power out, I am not sure if enough timing can be pulled to stop sever traction lose. So controlling injector sequence makes sense. Searching the board for old threads found little but I know this is a is a common problem and feel sure you guys have figured this out.
For consideration I use a T4MO ecu .
you can PM me if you don't want to be public I can understand why. THX

The old Lexus LS400s head a dedicated traction control computer that had its own electronically controlled throttle in front of the cable actuated throttle. It'd start closing the throttle upon wheel spin. Might be able to retrofit that somehow?

On a turbo car you could be bleeding off wastegate pressure on the spring with a boost solenoid. You'd be able to reduce boost as tires are slipping allowing them to grab and go. Pulling timing is fairly effective too.

There are a few popular methods of traction control, one is comparing wheel speeds and determining slip based on comparing them and looking for a difference in speed. The second is watching acceleration rate of the drive shaft and looking for any sudden jerk in acceleration which would be considered slip. The third method still uses driveshaft speed but compares it to a known good acceleration curve (usually user supplied) and assumes anything over that is slip.

After you determine how you want to measure for slip you have to figure how you want to correct for it if detected. Commonly spark retard is the first action, followed by more extreme measures like cutting spark to cylinders working your way from cutting 1 cylinder all the way up to cutting all cylinders. Sometimes Boost control is used, DBW, or a combo of all the above.

Depending on which of these things you want will determine what is available. If you just want to use spark control and do it based off driveshaft acceleration rate you can probably make it work with some of the higher end MSD stuff like a power grid and ARC module or maybe some of the Davis Technology boxes. If you want to use wheel speeds you are likely looking into an aftermarket EFI system to do it effectively.
