Hi guys. Trying to choose one - anyone have any experience with the trick flow unit in particular? It has a different design than all other catch cans, they have their own prefilter that goes onto the valve cover instead of the pcv valve, and they move the pcv valve to the output of the catch can. I like the idea and the look of the Trick Flow unit, but it’s a bit more expensive and I can’t find any reviews for it anywhere.
Thanks!
Sy

Re: Air/Oil separator choices - Trick Flow or Moroso?
I don't have any experience with either of these. I did try to fashion my own out of a super-cheap pneumatic separator, but it was a huge fail. It was simply too small so while the oil did come into it, the airflow through it was still too great. So the oil never hit slow enough air to fall out of air-suspension and collect and so it slipped right on into the engine anyway. And granted, I was abusing its intended application and purpose. However based on that experience, I can offer some thoughts that might help you in your selection. Or maybe this is just noise, you decide.
But one thing I did was I made this thing and didn't put any thought into how often I'd need to manually drain it. The drain in the thing was a simple Schrader valve that had to be manually actuated to drain it. Add to that, I located the separator AFTER the PCV valve just because it was convenient given the PCV was designed to fit into the rubber grommet in the back of the intake. Again, with no experience or thought put into it, I got was I invested...a setup destined to fail, and it did. Not only did it not work as intended, it eventually clogged.
After having this experience and seeing the errors of my ways, if I were going to endeavour to try this again I would have my collector pull from the crank case directly, and the inlet would be in the bottom of the can. This way during times when the flow ceased, the oil that got collected could back-flow back into the crankcase through the same tube it came in. This, of course, does require that the unit be mounted above the engine and the hose make a downward path back to the engine. The PCV would be in-line and after the separator/collector. Ideally, the PCV and separator would be one in the same device! I didn't look into either of these in super great detail but just looking at the pictures, the TF design seems more likely to fit this description than the Moroso. The TF kit even includes an in-line valve so even if you don't have true PCV valve-action, you can throttle how fast the ventilation occurs which is probably just as good as a PCV valve unless you are boosted. I can't tell if any of the pieces include a backflow valve, but it wouldn't surprise me if they do have backflow capabilities built-in given boosted applications aren't that uncommon. So my suggestion would be to go with the TF kit. It just looks more like what I'd want in a PCV separator device.
