Linux Support?

Post by twinturbostang » Fri Dec 13, 2002 1:18 pm

Hey Mike. I was planning on putting together a Linux box (either Red Hat or Mandrake). And was wondering if the CalEdit/CalCon software works on Linux.

BTW, I remember you saying you had a linux box at home. Which version would you recommend (red hat or mandrake)? I'm new to linux, and I've heard that Mandrake is easier to use (more GUI than command line). But I think Red Hat is more popular. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Brian

There is no software release for linux. It *might* work under a program called 'wine' (WINdows Emulator, http://www.winehq.com). There is probably more chance that caledit will work and calcon will not. I have not tested any of this though.

Hmm. Well I know Mike has a Linux box. And I think I remember him saying that there might be support for it some day. So I was just wondering if that was still a possibility.

I believe he still wants to do it, but there is nothing as of yet. That is all I know about it.

I personally would love to see a linux release, as that is what I am using 95% of my time, I am a programmer for the ISP that is hosting this.

Yeah, he probably does want to do a linux version, but I'm sure his plate is already overflowing with stuff to work on first.

Since Mike hasn't chimed in yet, and since you use Linux most of the time, what's your take on the different versions? Which do you use? And which would you suggest I start out with? Mandrake and Red Hat seem to be the most popular (AFAIK). Maybe I should just get both versions and run them both! :D BTW, how hard is it to set up a dual boot drive, with Windows XP and Linux? I have XP on my desktop, but would like to have Linux on there too. Oh, and I plan on buying a new hard drive, since the one I have is old and small. So I would be starting from a blank drive. Probably easier (maybe) than having to use partition magic or something to re-partition the drive.

Brian,

I've run both CalEdit and CalCon under a really old version of WINE, and they both work great. However, this was just replaying datalogs, or modifying binaries. I've never tried to use either when connected to the TwEECer module, and I suspect there will be some major issues with WINE and the USB communication.

As for Linux distros, I run a really old Caldera installation (still kernel 2.16, but it's so stable and reliable, why fix it if it ain't broke, right?). If I were to install a newer distro, I would go after the latest SUSE, or Xandros (I wouldn't consider any other). With the Xandros, you'd have the highest probability of full CalEdit/CalCon functionality, since the interoperability with windoze applications is best supported by Xandros right now.

edit: oh yeah, Xandros is the only distro that will "non-destructively" repartition an existing NTFS partition for a dual boot installation with windoze. And if you buy a boxed distro (any), all the repartitioning applications are normally included with the installation program.

Thanks for the info Ed. I'm not familiar with those versions of Linux. But maybe I'll check them out.
