Charging Troubles

Post by Daren Woodall » Mon Dec 23, 2002 4:48 pm

Recently after making some tuning changes, I disconnected the negative battery poll to flush KAM. I reconnecting the battery poll and started the engine. I noticed the low voltage indicator on my instrument panal remained lit. Also, the voltage guage showed low.

I didn't suspect this problem was tied to the recent disconnection of the battery. I felt the voltage guage had been showing low for some time.

I pulled the alternator and had it bench tested by Autozone. They confirmed the alternator was bad as it produced 12.5 volts under load. For good measure, I had them measure a new (rebuild) alternator which produced 15 volts for comparison. I purchased the new alternator and installed it. I restarted the car and saw no change. Still, no charging.

Could disconnecting and reconnecting the battery poll blown a fuse? What do you think and where should I look?

I appreciate any help here,

Thanks to the kindness of a fellow car club member, I gained access the the charging system schematics identifying a 20amp fuse in the underhood fuse panel that had blown.

I don't know for certain if the fuse blew as a result of disconnecting and reconnecting the battery but the two events coincided together.
