EEC-V and COP Options

Post by 67cougar » Thu Nov 02, 2023 2:11 pm

I have just pulled an EEC-V from a 2003 Grand Marquis to swap to a 351w. I'm new to tuning and am getting confused about conflicting information or partial information I can find online. I appreciate any help anyone can offer!

The harness includes 8 COP coils. I would like to stick with the COP setup, though there are some mounting issues that come up on a 351w. I don't believe I can safely mount the factory style 2-wire coils and harness without contacting the headers. I've been researching other coil options and see that there are either 3 wire or 4 or 5 wire ls-style coils for most aftermarket coils. It appears the 3 wire coils are 12v trigger with an added ground and the 4 or 5 wire coils are 5v trigger with the hot wire keyed and up to 2 different grounds. Feel free to correct my understanding if it is wrong.

My assumption (which is a big assumption) is that the EEC-V drives the coils on 12v and the 3 wire is the preferred method. I have found a lot of people wanting to move to the LS style coil with the lower voltage trigger in order to save some money. I can't find any clear answer as to whether this is okay and, if it is, what modifications have to be made to the EEC-V or harness to properly drive the coil? Is there any benefit other than price? If you can use the LS coil, what needs to be done to match voltage or impedence or anything else? If this is not worth the additional effort, is there any danger of using the 3-wire COP?

Thanks!
