Tuning Marine Ford 351W GT40

Anything about Ford EEC tuning. TwEECer and Moates questions dominate, but there's some SCT and OBD-II knowledge too.

What strategy are you working with?

Not a clue what strategy with the crazy bulk it is.
How's the tuning coming along? Still having problems?

I had trouble getting enough power to the ecm to read it. turns out I had the J3 reader on upside down.
Um, getting enough power to it while the J3 reader is upside down can not be a good thing. It is likely you have let some smoke out :(
I got this read and opened it in the editor. Looks like there is nothing then I scroll down and start to see some code and then continue down and nothing again. I guessing this had to do with where the code is written?
The read is not correct. Maybe you have your address ranges wrong, or you have smoke signals :(

Just took this read using a different setting. This "looks" better in binary editor as there is now data showing up in the beginning of the file. What you guys think? I will try and put this read on a Moates F3V2 chip and see what happens.

Take 4 is not a good read either.

Give the attached a try.

Ok thanks I will give this a try! Where did this file come from? Is this my read that you then modified in some way? No questioning it, just curious.

Hi All,

This thread has been an interesting read. I have the same problem, I just didn't know it!

Is the only hardware than can be used as a replacement EEC the F4FF-12A650-LB? If hypothetically my ECU died what are my options?

That is an engineering part number.

Match up the Hardware codes. If the catchcodes are different use a chip with the right bin loaded.

jsa, your rehash worked! Thank you so much!

Do you mind elaborating on what you changed and what made you realize those changes were needed from my read?

If I have sacraficed my original ECU for the sake of this project then that sucks.... The read that jsa rehashed and made work was taken from my ecu after I had done the backwards J3 plug multiple times so luckily I got something usable off of it as it should have been well toasted by that time. Perhaps this thread will morph into me trying to fix my ecu if its in fact toasted. Ill know by next spring when I get my boat project finished up and finally get to put the motor back in and test everything.

You are welcome.

The change was time for me to look at it more.

Time spent disassembling to confirm it was an issue with address range only.

As it is you are still to learn how to read out the factory bin. So compare your read with the rehash in a hex editor. What do you see? Try reading out the bin again until it matches.

Will certainly try and learn something here by spending some time comparing the two reads. Thanks.

Time will tell once I get a chance to try and run the motor but given my read that you rehashed and made work do you have any indication that I have indeed "let some smoke out" of my ecm with my backwards J3 mishap?

with the j3 hooked backwards you'd usually be unable to communicate on the j3 port, so if you can read the tune out correctly that would hint that its working, chances are its not going to though

When I had the J3 backwards I was not able to get a viable read. Once I figured out I had it backwards and corrected it I was able to get a read that fellow poster jsa was able to rehash and the read was put on a Moates chip and it worked when tested using a donor ecm. As to wether or not my factory ecm was destroyed from the backwards J3 mishap I do not know because I have not tried running my engine with it since I started this project. I'm holding onto some hope that because we were able to get a read that worked on the Moates chip then my factory ecm may have survived the backwards J3 debackle.... when I get a chance to test the factory ecm I will post whether or not it works now. Good thing I have a working Moates chip with the tune on it though!

So, how's the tuning going along? I am also learning a lot through this platform.
