Anything about Ford EEC tuning. TwEECer and Moates questions dominate, but there's some SCT and OBD-II knowledge too.

Getting Started - Tuning 98 Mustang with EEC-V

Post by Rawr256 » Wed Apr 02, 2025 8:46 pm

Apologies if this has been covered somewhere, but following some links feels like going in circles and it is hard to tell what is relevant/isn't.

Long story short - I've been working on a 98 Mustang for my Father-In-Law. We were under the impression that the ECM in it was from a 2003/2004 Cobra to match the motor that was put in it. After wrapping up putting things together I've determined that I suspect it has a 98 Mustang Cobra ECM in it to work with the 4V setup on it and the harness that was attached to everything. My plan of using HPTuners is now shot because it won't communicate with the older ECM.

This brings me here - I've got Tunerpro RT downloaded, but for the life of me, can't figure out how to retrieve a BIN via software. Looking through the FAQ it mentioned Binary Editor but when I install and open it on my computer Windows freaks out and disables it. Is there another solution to get into the ECM to tune it? The next option was to drop in a Holley setup to tune, but the Father-In-Law wasn't too keen on dropping $2k.

Thanks!

Do you have an mpvi3? If so hptuners now works with some of the older stuff. I'm using it on my 97 mustang gt

I've got a MPVI2 and have tried tapping in with that and gotten nothing.

My understanding reading the forums was the MPVI3 doesn't work with anything 2003 and older and they had no status/eta on when it would be fixed.

What bin are you trying to open? Im not following.
SCT would work, but it would be about $750 for the handheld and the tuning software.
91 GT, A9P, systemax II, 75mm tb, AFP, 75mm Pro M, 42#, Vortech S trim, GT40 crate 5.0, BBK catted X, flows, Tremec 3550, Pro 5.0, 3.27 gears. Tweecer RT, TunerPro.

Sorry if I made it convoluted - I'm trying to download a BIN at all, not sure if I'm overcomplicating it or what.

I've found ones available online, but no idea how to download what is currently on the car or send it.

I've considered the SCT route, but this would be the only vehicle that I would use it on, so it is a bit of a harder pill to swallow since anything newer I can do with HPTuners.

I'm using hptuners with an mpvi3 to tune my 97 gt, but you do need to get the special firmware and use the latest beta software
