Anything about Ford EEC tuning. TwEECer and Moates questions dominate, but there's some SCT and OBD-II knowledge too.

TAB/TAD/EGR solinoid delete

Post by 86caprirs » Wed May 26, 2010 10:57 pm

1988 Thunderbird sport. 5.8L swap. GT40 aluminum heads, TF Stage 1 cam, 1.7 Crane/Cobra RR, 1 5/8" Headers, UPR x pipe, Proffesional Products upper/lower intake, BBK 70mm TB and spacer, 73mm C&L meter calibrated to 24lb injectors with an A9L pcm.I have done the mass air swap. Very easy to do.

Question is that I have blocked the EGR and removed the thermactor pump. I have blocked the air injection ports at the rear of the heads. Now my check engine light is on because the solinoids are not plugged in. What do I do to either trick the PCM to turning the light off? Resisters? In this province in Canada we don't have emmisions testing.

Thanks

That's an easy fix with either a chip or datalogging tuner. Just turn off thermactor and EGR control in the tune. A simple search for either of those in BinaryEditor's search window should give you the options you need.

If you are trying to do this without putting a chip or datalogging device on the EEC, then you can try just connecting the solenoids to the their respective connectors. I've also head putting a 100 ohm resistor across the leads also works. But I've never confirmed that. Most anybody on this site is going to have tuning devices of some type and will just delete them in the tune without the need for hardware hacks.

I tried the hardware delete by soldering resistors inline, but that was before I purchased the QH and BE. I don't think it worked for all of them though, I cannot confirm nor deny this though. I did have some codes after the swap, but had a problem with my CEL, so I don't remember what codes they were.

The easiest way to do it, is in the tune, like suggested above.

I was going to try to do this without a tuner. I work for Ford so I use as much stuff as I can from work. I heard about resistors but i can't find it anywhere. I would like to get someone to tune it to turn it off but that allways cost money to do. Not that I am cheap, just like to try things first. Then as a last resort I go to a tuner.

Thanks for the info guys and the link.

Tune it yourself. For the simplist setup, you can write chips, which are about $60 a piece. The hardware to write it is another $60, I think? But by far the best option is to get the Quarterhorse datalogging and BinaryEditor, along with a Wideband O2 sensor. That gives you complete control (assuming your EEC is supported by BE).

folow that schematic for the EGR

the TAB, TAD, and CANP circuits get 75ohm 3watt resistors each

Wow. Thanks for the info guys. I really appreciate it. I still have the EGR valve position sensor plugged in and the erg valve on my TB. I was debating on removing it all together with a block off plate. I just removed the solinoids and left the connectors taped to the harness for just incase. The vacuum hoses are gone too. One for the vacuum tree and the other from the intake to the fuel pressure reg are the ony ones I have.

I was wondering about tuning devises. I saw the one from R.A.C.E systems but it looks like a $500 data logger and thats it. But I am going to look into this quarterhourse one you guys have mentioned.

Read the FAQ about what you should know before buying a tweecer or qh. That will clear up a lot for you.
