Anything about Ford EEC tuning. TwEECer and Moates questions dominate, but there's some SCT and OBD-II knowledge too.

W3Z3 (CZAJL) W/Manual, revs when shifting and high idle when hot

Post by fasterpatrick » Thu Jul 10, 2025 10:48 am

Okay, I have procrastinated this issue long enough about ten years long, way back long time ago, you guy's helped me get this car on the road and working "OKAY". now for the issue when I start the car every thing works fine idle clears the engine and settles in around 800 rpm but when the car starts to warm it creeps slightly and if it gets to the hot side easy to to when temps get close to 90 out side it will climb to around 1300 rpm. It also has this weird bug where when I push in the clutch to shift the gear the engine will rev to 2000-2500 rpm and drop. I think that may be caused by the fact that I wired the neutral and brake switch "B00" into the clutch because I was told you can set an RPM limit to stop over rev with the clutch depressed. Now I think that is what is causing the rev at shift, am I thinking right or is the some thing else causing this? Any help to guide me down the path to resolving these issues would be great.

Here are some things that come to mind worth confirming/verifying/eliminating...

Determine if the rev when pushing in the clutch is because of an unreasonably high ISC airflow. To do that, note what the commanded duty cycle/position/flow for the ISC is and note if it is the same or jumps on declutch.

If it is the same, then it's possible the ISC is feeding the engine enough air at Preposition that it doesn't transition the engine from a positive-forward-torque to a negative-torque (i.e. decel) condition prior to pushing the clutch in. If ISC Prepositon airflow is "too high" for the RPM you are shifting at, then the engine would noticeably increase in RPM on declutch no different than if you held the throttle plate at part-throttle while pushing in on the clutch.

However if instead you see the ISC increase in airflow right on declutch, then it may be something else. I recall GUFx strats have ISC adders that will let you add ISC air on certain events, such as a transition from idle->drive (useful for automatics), drive->idle (sometimes useful for manuals to prevent them from dropping RPM too fast and stalling), or when AC is engaged. Check that one of these scalars isn't set to an unreasonable contribution for drive->idle.

If datalogs can show it's not ISC control related, the next thought is maybe there's a sudden change in spark advance. Most strats can define different spark advances for different conditions like drive, neutral, closed throttle, etc. It's possible that on declutch, you suddenly transition to a much higher advance which could rev the engine higher. Without a load on the engine, you likely wouldn't notice an excessive advance condition (e.g. knock or surging). So note the advance right before and after declutch and see if it is a factor or maybe just a minor contributor.
