Anything about Ford EEC tuning. TwEECer and Moates questions dominate, but there's some SCT and OBD-II knowledge too.

Should I Make More Changes To My Base Tune?

Post by 92GreenGT » Sun Feb 04, 2007 8:30 pm

I'm using the Moates adapter combo and TunerPro/LM1 WB to do my tuning, I havent burnt a chip yet but these are the changes ive made to the stock A9L Code so far based on talking to people asking questions etc. I'm also keeping a tuning log on the computer of all the changes ive made.

1. Thermactor Present Switch - 0(Disabled)
2. Changed Injector Slope High - 40.6808
3. Changed Injector Slope Low - 46.8006
4. Changed MAF KOER MIN - .282v
5. WOT Spark vs RPM - 20 Degrees Total After 3500rpm
6. EGR System Type - 2(No EGR)
7. MAF Transfer - 76mm/GreenTube Excel Spreadsheet Data
8. Injector Offset vs Battery Voltage - Multiplied All Values by Injector Ratio(.452)
9. Canister Purge Min RPM - 9999rpm(Disabled)
10. Cranking Fuel PW vs ECT - Multiplied All Values By Injector Ratio(.452)

My combo is as follows:
1992 GT
A9L
DIY Turbo Kit(MP T70 6psi wg spring)
Explorer Upper/Lower Intake
76mm C&L
#42 Injectors
and a Walbro fuel pump

I've got one more edit I have to do based on the low MAF voltage, but besides that, do you see anything else I should modify for a base tune? Thanks
Dave

I thought most people running 42lb injectors used 42/50 for their slopes. You are using numbers lower than that which would run things richer. I guess its a good starting place for a boosted system. Better to be too rich than too lean.

Those slopes I believe are right out of the 02 lightning bin. They are a good starting point.

does the a9l have minimum injector pulsewidth?

Then it's a good starting place indeed.

If that's a scalar, I haven't found it. I think that was a concept introduced in CBAZA and newer EEC.

If there is a minimum injector time for the A9x, then I have not found it and the GUFB strategy book does not mention it. I just have not even looked for it.

I think we all ought just say 'there isn't a Min_Injector_PW' in the GUF* strategy until someone proves there is :D (and I think that will never happen)

4. Changed MAF KOER MIN - .282v
Anyone, What is the reasoning behind doing this?

Also, seeing how this is a base tune for a turbo car and how I'm looking to setup a base tune for my car I am going to follow this thread and hopefully contribute.

What about adjusting the sealevel load scaling vs. rpm function? Wouldn't changing this to the "getting started.pdf" reccomendation help w/ putting the car in the right load "rows."

Also, keeping w/ the load functions would scaling up the "fuel table load" help w/ the sealevel scaling function?

Lastly, what about modifying the base fuel table to a more desirable 11.8-1 AFR on the high load/ect rows to help target the desired AFR?

I can't remember the scalar I had to adjust, but intermittently, my MAF would drop below the default minimum voltage in the tune on deceleration. When this happened, the Check Engine light would come on and go right back off as soon as I pressed the gas a little. After lowring this to a value lower than my lowest datalogged MAF value, I haven't seen the Check Engine light coming on since...at least not coming on about MAF low Voltage.

I can't comment on those other questions.

About the MAF KOER voltage change, I was told this would keep any false codes from coming up when doing the KOER code test.

I dont have adobe reader on my computer, but im going to install it so I can read through some of these PDF files to make sure I havent forgotten anywhing so far. I'm new to using this type of software and tuning basically, so im open to adjustments to the base tune. Thanks guys

Any of you turbo guys pull timing from your part throttle tables? I havent done this and im wondering about it? Anyone suggest any ideas? Thanks

if your at part throttle and go to a WOT Blast your timing could poteintially be way to high for a second or 2 and cause some detonation, depending on your head gasket type and amount of power and boost could blow a head gasket under the right conditions. Probly just me being better safe than sorry... maybe someone else could elborate on this or if im just talkin non-sense?

Ive heard this as well, thats why I was curious about it. Right now I run stock style gaskets, but plan on cometics/studs if/when they blow. Only running 6lbs of boost right now but would like to go up with that.

Anyone else have any ideas on the part throttle situation, I know there are some turbomustang guys on here. Someone fill us in please, thanks.

I would definitely modify your sealevel load scaling vs. rpm function. Increase the max loads by about 40% (6/14.7) and scale everything on the Y axis to compensate.

I don't think multiplying your injector battery offsets by 0.45 is valid. Download BE and EA. I think they will have correct starting values for your injectors.

Changing your target a/f ratio to something richer as load goes above 50% is probably a good idea.

You are going to need to pull part throttle timing at all load/rpm points where the car is making significantly more torque than it did stock. Remember an increase in engine torque means there is more cylinder pressure. Too much cylinder pressure is the main thing that will cause detonation. You will need to pull the most timing at the rpm the engine makes peak torque. If the car has a cam with more duration than stock, you won't need to pull as much or any timing at low rpms, since the increased cam duration will bleed off boost/compression.

If you install SS head gaskets, remember that the head gaskets are fuses. If they can't blow when the engine detonates, something else is going to. Whatever that part is will almost always be much more expensive to fix.

Thats wild seeing this thread up near the top still, thanks for the bump.

I sold the moates stuff awhile back, swapped turbo kits and im in the market for a tweecer RT this time around. Putting A/C back on the car and little things like that, trying to get it back to a "nice" car. If/when I find a used tweecer rt I'll be back around to bug everyone with questions. :) Before I was in the market to buy one I could find them all the time, now that I have money waiting I think everyone has decided to keep them, haha.
