Finally got into the 11's with my P set up!

Post by TooSlo86 » Mon Oct 22, 2012 10:47 am

Stock high mileage explorer 302 long block, stock P heads never been off l/b. Trick Flow springs, Scotty Brown Custom Cam. Had the rear end set up down to the point I was actually able to launch at 6100+ and still cut 1.57-1.58 60fts on the 235/60/15 MT ET Drag Radials. Going into a mild headwind all day and on the 11.92 DA was at 1225 feet, not exactly the great air I was hoping for but still got it done. Couldn't round up anyone to go to film from the stands so all I had was in car but nokooler got vids from the stands that maybe he can share. I would love to see it from the outside from as good as it felt out of the hole ;-) 5 out of the 7 passes were in the 11's with a 11.98/11.99/11.935/11.933/11.929, should have been bracket racing, but the red lights would have killed me. First pass went 12.11 when I wasn't aggressive enough out of the hole not expecting the hook to be there. Last pass was just fugly flare up out of the clutch and it went 12.35@108. Still a good day, glad I get to park it for the year knowing it can go 11's.

Heck yea! That .98 wasn't even the quickest of the day but it was surely the "best one" in my book! Then I was worried that I wouldn't be able to repeat it, :lol: Now I can put 'er in hibernation happily. Oh, the clutch held on until the final pass and it is now done....

Not a chance! Did you see the in car vids? Way too much fun rowing gears! It's bad enough for the 6 months of winter I have to drive an auto, let alone my fun car. :biggrin:

Now get to work so you are ready for Bradenton :lol:

hahaha, I guess since I'm officially an old "codger" (42, with bad knees, etc.), I'd rather run the auto. And yes, you're right, I do need to get to work!

Thanks!

You also have a heavy sn95 and an auto though.

A track down south a ways (Milan) added 2 more dates, today, and tomorrow to run, so since I unfortunately couldn't go to tnt today, I'm going to go try my luck at the Gamblers Race (bracket) tomorrow. Would be nice to have a good 2 time trials and go a couple rounds but I can't complain at all to be at the track in late November.

I'm incredibly upset I couldn't go today because when I checked the density altitude it was at an absolutely AMAZING -483 feet!!!!!!!!! :surprised: I could run some hellacious #'s in that kind of air. The forecast looks pretty good but not quite that good, the BP today was 30.60!

Hopefully after tomorrow I'll have a new best ;-)

I feel, that if I get this tune dialed in. I will be screaming quick.

No, juice Mike, no blower (however I was asked if it had a blower today :biggrin:), no nada but motor, just good air today! About -500 feet DA. The clutch lasted for 5 passes before really giving up as in, has got to be replaced now, no milking it out anymore, it's D.O.N.E. It went 11.82, 11.81, 11.85. 11.78, and another 11.81 before it started flaring up resulting in 11.90's before I packed it up realizing no amount of adjusting it at the firewall was going to help. So here's my new pb vid now;http://youtu.be/yD4H3yCtpzc

And yes Mangos, an absurd amount of passes down the 1320 to get your tune and suspension dialed in is HUGE, it just takes time, ALOT of time.

So, whats the secret to making it hook like that? I've pretty much given up trying to get a decent launch, and I'm tired of the way it drives on the street.

I'm getting ready to go the other way now. I have a 90% complete IRS set up that I'll probably toss in in the spring and go play in the twisties.

The secret is; there is no secret. It's just time trying different things till you figure out what works. Have someone go and film the car from the line from different angles and study (frame by frame) what is going on at launch, watch the initial hit to the tires, watch if the tire hits then rebounds tucking up into the fender or does the fender gap stay the same, does it leave level etc, etc. On mine what ended up working is mixing and matching the rear springs, ie on the drivers side rear I have a stock uncut 4 cyl spring, on the passenger side rear I have a 1 or 2 coil cut off GT spring (can't remember which). I also have welded up my torque boxes and have my home made subframe connectors. I run an airbag in the p-side rear that seems to work best around 45-50lbs of pressure, the p-side rear shock is set on 3/4 firm and the d-side is at 1/2 firm while I vary the fronts from loose to firm dependent upon how much hook is in the track. When I 1st went with the 4.30s I thought it was going to be impossible to launch hard on the radials but I'm now launching off the rev limiter set at 6500 and it flat hooks! Like everything else, it just takes a ton of testing and trials, no black magic.

Here's some slips from yesterday, and yes, I did red light every flippin' time;

Here's a little peak Twin. If I can swing it this winter I will be replacing the cheap tubular arms with TeamZ double adjustable hardware to include their relocated uppers;

Right about 3050 w/180lbs of me in it.

I know it has more in it with good valve-springs (vs these 6yo ones that weren't even up to snuff for this cam when new), my MPH didn't move as it should have. I'm clipping the rev limiter through the traps and when I run my larger bias plies it goes the same 1/8 mph but picks up nearly 2.5mph @ the 1/4. Yesterday was all on the shorter radials floating valves through the traps :shock:
