get my 455 Olds running

Post by UdoFink » Thu Dec 18, 2014 3:50 am

a long time project goes a step further
My 455 Olds that sould get im my GMC Motorhome is running on dyno now with an EEC IV A9l
Sarting fine idles good an have throttle response with no load. I runs to lean in most ranges.
We habe the BE and the QH but I have no idee to start tuning so it will be nice when some her give me little advice. I have expiriance in tuning and dyno work but mot with stand alone aftermarket ECUs and the BE is a nice tool but my english is limited

Thanks Udo Fink

You aren't asking any specific questions nor giving any great details in this post, so I've moved it to the Lounge.

However here are the things that I think as I read this:
  • What strategy/EEC/tune are you using?
  • You say it runs lean, how are you determining this? WB? HEGOs? Exhaust smell? Making assumption based on LAMBSE? Being you are on a dyno, I'm going to assume you are using a WB, but it would be nice to have that explicitly said AND an indication of how lean the engine is. For example, if you want it at 0.85 at WOT, is actual AFR 0.95 or 1.10 (lambda values, multiply by 14.64 to get AFR values).
  • Are you running the engine in Closed Loop or are all these assessments on the dyno OL?
  • Is the lean only at idle loads, or is it running lean at cruising loads, accel loads, and WOT loads on the dyno?
  • What are your cam specs? If the cam has wide duration, this can cause lean conditions at low RPMs. Although that should disappear at higher RPMs.
  • Until the engine is installed, there's only so much you'll be able to tune on the dyno. To smooth the tune, you need to know all the transients and on-the-road behavior of the engine at all the various running conditions (cranking cold, running cold, accelerating from a stop, accelerating at speed, etc).

Thanks for answer

I use A9M box and A9M bins with GUFB strategy

first motor run lean and was not possible to accelerate but there was an open MAF sensor after I install 90° 3" esxhaust pipe run much better accelerate ans run rich ARF 8-12 most time we use WB and use the narrow simulation on the EEC

not sure if running OL ore CL I have install everythonf like in car and lambda values ocilating so it looks like CL

after install the pipe on MAF I try first run with load WB was allways in 8-10 AFR no power and exhaust glow very fast so for me it looks that too rich and too late ignition at idle it run fine and AFR is 12-15

cam is near stock a comp cam towing

For me I install the motor on the dyno to get it run and more importand to learn and understand to tune an EEC IV

I will try to make video and post on youtube next time I run the motor

Just test run on idle no load and notice that is retard the ignition back to 21° at 3000 so I get it more ignition in base table but still retard the ignition back.
Is it possible that it need a speed signal ? Is there some that can limit power to no t over rev in idle ?

Thanks Udo

First off, you said base table. If you are at 3000, you are more likely in the Sealevel and/or Alt table...unless you have FN125 setup really odd. There's an FAQ about how to simplify spark to only the Sealevel table so you can basically forget about the Base table.
Simplifying timing on 89-93 Mustang 5.0L (GUFx) EECs

Next note that as soon as the throttle returns Closed, the strategy will revert to Neutral Idle Spark control which is defined by the Neutral Idle Spark function.

Thanks,

for me I do not understand why it retards the ignition that much.
Stock .bin`s so normaly it should have more ignition and at lower rpm there is more advanve up to 36°
At the sealevel table there is only 21° in the window where the tracer goes but when I cange in base table that it still take the ignition back to 21° so shoul I make canges in sealevel table ?
I try to make as describtet in your link I hope that I understand everything and will try..

If it drops to 21 on Closed Throttle (CT), are you considering the affects of spark modifiers like FN841N?

it works now :-)

we get power and motor sounds good but runswith to much fuel
How I start to adjust fuel ?
Is that similar to the ignition, is ist possible to simlpify ?

Thanks Udo

Depending on how much confidence you have in your injector parameters, you may need to dial in the injector slope/bp values. There's a thread in the Tech Docs about my way of dialing in injector parameters using EA:
Tuning Injector Slopes

However if you are confident in your numbers, then what's left is getting your MAF Curve dialed in. This has been discussed many times. Although the most recent thread detailing anything was this thread I posted in:
EEC Analyzer MAF tune options
It mostly focused on non-WB tuning, but it might be worth the read.

There are multiple "Tuning 101" discussions in the FAQ section to look at too including one about MAF 101 and Idle 101.

Motor runs again.

We cange to an A9M ECU bcause the old have no sticker and not sure about it runs fine from first start.
For me it was amazing thet this 5.0 ECU runs without any tuning on a 455. AFR is good in all ranges only idles is little unstable.
It was interesting that lot problems we get with datalog coming from electric noise in dyno room. After we grounding the ECU case they gone !!!!! we have this in past on racing bikes with aftermarket ECUs. I think the metall in car will like a wall to that noise and when no steel is between ECU and ignition it can make mistery things.
