Sometimes it IS hardware failure

Post by cgrey8 » Wed Jan 20, 2016 7:34 am

Most of the time when I get odd behavior from my truck, it's because of something I've done in the tune that was inadvertent. As we enter sub-freezing conditions here in Ga, I started noticing odd behavior with my engine's idle. It seemed to hang at higher RPMs than it should. I couldn't really figure out what was going on. It wasn't ECT related, so I assumed it had to be ACT related. So I went around looking at anything that possibly could be negatively affected by low ACTs. Nothing. Then I started looking to see if DASPOT or Idle adjustment Rate was set too slow. No fix. DSDRPM was still "stuck" at 800 and I knew it should be going down to mid 600s. And intermittently, it would drop.

Then I noticed the problem. Even with the stick in neutral, the datalog was showing DRV. I push in on the clutch, and it would register NEUT. My Drive idle is 800 and neutral idle 632. So apparently, my transmission's neutral switch is bad. For the time being, I'll set my drive idle down low so I don't have to hold in the clutch to maintain a neutral idle.

But sometimes it's not me. Sometimes it really is a hardware failure.

Since this is a chance to experiment, I'm going to see how I like it with drive RPM target set to a lower RPM than neutral so I can idle in true neutral with a nice low RPM that flutters into the 500s, and when I get ready to move, I push in on the clutch, which will command a slightly higher RPM and get the engine "ready" to be loaded by the clutch. That might actually work out better. We'll see...

BTW, if anybody has any experienced reasons why this is probably going to be a bad idea, feel free to chime in so I can pay attention to that.
