SuperMoon

Post by EDS50 » Fri Mar 18, 2011 11:01 am

Is anyone concerned or even know about the "SuperMoon" we all are about to experience saturday night March 19, 2011? I heard about it this morning on the news. Some say its going to be nothing more than tidal flooding and others predict anything from tectonic plate shifts to full on doom and gloom. I know we'll fnd out saturday but I figured we can have a little fun with it and speculate until then.

Lets blame the Japan earthquake on supermoon. I wonder if it'll cause them to have another plate shift? Then how many reactors will have issues?

Lol, I am just amazed how many people are trying to predict natural disasters and the world to come to an end as of late. I personally think tomorrow will be business as usual.

From what I've read, the only thing most people can expect is a slightly higher tide and a 30% brighter moon. But we've been seeing the moon get brighter and brighter as the moon has been on its approach.

Thats all I am expecting too if that even happens. What is curious is that the moons positioning will be at its closest at 3:00pm esdt.

I wonder if this means that if I've been loosing weight this week, it wasn't really me loosing weight, it was just the moon making me lighter?

1st i've heard of this, guess we shall find out shortly

if the moon does make my car lighter it only makes for a better ET

sounds like a win-win

lol...ok well I hate to inject some science into this, but your car will not lose mass if there was a greater gravitational effect that was even perceivable. Mass is what counts when you are talking about acceleration, not weight (which is basically just a measure of gravitational pull between two bodies).

That's true. Lighter car that is the same mass is less traction for takeoff.

This is also true. If anything, you might have issues with front-end lift if under extreme conditions (at the most, and I sincerely doubt it would even be noticeable - even by pro-street/top-fuel/etc type vehicles truthfully).

One thing that *might* be noticeable and need compensating for is missile/orbital vehicle launch because at those extremes the extra 'tug' the moon is giving us might make it necessary to slightly adjust fuel input/thrust output to achieve a desired orbit (ie: the escape velocity for earth is less because of the net-reduced gravity the earth is pulling on us with).

Well, seems like the supermoon was a complete bust for the end of the world theorists. The moon didnt look any different to me than usuall. What a let down...lol..

I always laugh about the people predicting the end of the world...it's just, silly. Everyone has a different date for whatever reason, and its all just comical...
EDS50 wrote:The moon didnt look any different to me than usuall. What a let down...lol..
Well, one reason might be is that its 'brghtness' which is what is supposedly special about it (30% brighter than normal), has been gradually increasing on its approach. So it isn't like all of the sudden BAM today it is significantly brighter.

one thing i noticed that was pretty odd was that there was more than just one

i was outside all night changing the pumpkin on a friends explorer, by 3am i had a case in me, it was somewhere around that time i witnessed the phenomenon, or something like that, shortly thereafter i blacked out
