Interesting news from tuning industry

Post by Mikal » Thu Jan 15, 2004 3:21 pm

I had an interesting email conversion with a premier tuner regarding the future of tuning. Some of this may be old news. I was surprised how diablo is handling the new joint venture with autologic. The predator and revolution look to be good products but the company scares me.

This is a paragraph from one email. The calibration library seems to be the answer to most problems in the DIY market, and at 99$ for chip and library, it's a steal. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

There are at least 5 diablo dealers in the area now; and more in the works. The price wars have already begun. To further muddy the waters, chips generated by dealer A can not be reprogrammed by dealer B they have security locks preventing them from being read. Add further complication of "no support for Autologic style chips", and "no support for Existing Diablo customers with red Diablo chips", and you have a scenario that is not only unfriendly to the customer; but to the tuner as well. And lastly, a 3rd party company out of Texas has contacted me wanting to know if I'm interested in writing calibrations for a new enterprise being funded by yet another new chip company that plans on launching a website under the name "ninetyninedollarchip.com". The scenario will be that the chips are drop-shipped direct to your door for $99, and are USB-programmable by the end-user using a website interface and calibration library. In other words, it's a DIY chip for $99 that can be freely programmed with any calibration in their library.

That "library" would work for 90% of the people out there who buy off the shelf chips/mail order chips.

It still wouldn't work for those people who are working on drivability issues/max power from unusual combos.

They better have one heck of a library, though.

the chip still has end user adjustment as i understand. I did a search and couldnt find the company. They were searching for talent approx. 3 months ago to build the library, so it should be close to done.
