how many amps does an EEC need
i want to be able to tune my EEC at my desktop instead of in my hot truck. im making a plug that that will provide power to the EEC but was wondering how much amps of 12v would an EEC use? i was gonna use a simple wall transformer but they might not provide enough power. any ideas how many 12v amps an EEC would be needed to safely read a tune from it? its an EEC-V if it matters

Re: how many amps does an EEC need
I've got a really old Realistic (RadioShack brand) 12VDC power supply that I think has a 1amp circuit breaker. With only the EEC and a tuning device plugged in, I believe it ran. I don't know that all the peripherals were working, but on a desk, they don't have to. Only the processor and chip really need to be functional at that point. So even if voltage was sagging into the 8-9v range, as long as the EEC processor's voltage regulator(s) are giving it 5v, it should function. And of course the chip (I think it was a TwEECer at the time) was connected to my laptop USB so it might have been powered by USB power...I don't know.
So bottom line, I don't know how many amps an EEC's 12v input consumes as it runs in a vehicle where it has it's peripherals and external I/O to power also. I wouldn't be surprised if the 12v supply line to an EEC pulls a few amps. But on a desk where none of that is connected or important, I believe the power draw to be at or below 1 amp.
This was also using an A9P or A9L (can't remember which). Newer EECs with higher speed processors and more peripherals, memory, and capability may have a higher amp draw even on a desk.

Re: how many amps does an EEC need
Like Chris I have a 12V 1A plug pack for bench testing that works. I haven't measured actual current draw.
Cheers

Re: how many amps does an EEC need
alright ill see if i can find something bigger but good to know you guys were able to use jsut a 1amp. being EEC-V i was thinking it might need more being much more advanced but also tech would be much more efficient so it might not draw any more either.
just for hell of it i looked at my old NES and its only rated for 9V AC 850mA. i dont think an EEC would be nearly as needy as a NES and as you said its not sending power to anywhere on a desk.
the main reason i need to do this at my desk is that i still cant get my Quarterhorse to correctly read my EEC. im thinking it might have a bad connection on the J3 so i was gonna do some testing to find out if something is wrong. also i had a nice laptop someone gave me and i fixed up that i kept in my truck just for tuning (incase my tweecer decided to use a blank tune and leave me stranded like it has). unfortunatly somebody stole it out of my truck. at least they didn't steal the dongle, i jsut happen to have it on my desktop that night trying to figure out something

i replied last month but apparently i closed the window before it went through, in any case,
I use a 15v 3amp dc adapter for my eec-4 testing and eec-5 flashing bench, works great
