EEC with no number 1. Identifier
Hello all, I know I'm new to the forum. I will say though, I'm not new to Ford's.
Here is the situation, I wish to run a smaller VW engine off of a A9L/P type of EEC. The easy part is the wiring. The only unknown is what will happen if you run an EEC without a number 1 identifier? Obviously one should be able to force a bank /batch style firing sequence for the injectors (correct me if I'm wrong) but the only thing we can't replicate is an identifier for cylinder number 1.
Long story short, we will be using a VR sensor onto an MSD box, THEN from the MSD (6AL) tach output into the TFI and EEC (Considering it is a square wave 5v output). The result of doing this should replicate an OEM ford hall effect distributer's signal without the number 1 identifier.
I will say, this would be 100x easier If there was a readily available tuning option for the 1998 ford explorer EEC's. Considering we can also use an OTS distributer to replicate the required cam position sensor signal paired with a 36-1 tooth wheel/ EDIS system. Any thoughts or responses are greatly appreciated, and thank you for your patience.

Re: EEC with no number 1. Identifier
Thank you for the response, but I cannot use 4.6l hardware due to the fact that I cannot replicate a 4.6l cam position sensor signal. A 1998 ford explorer had a 5.0 with edis. The cam sensor was a single pickup for cyl 1 only
Re: EEC with no number 1. Identifier
I guess to start over and clarify,
Here is the scenario
HARDWARE: for option 1.
1915 CC aircooled VW (4cyl)
36-1 tooth wheel
Cam sensor output matches 1998 explorer style output (NO.1 ID only)
EDIS 8 module for sequential spark paired with LS coils
What EEC/strategy can be utilized with this setup? I cannot find any 5.0 EDIS EEC'S that are able to be tuned. I would imagine a 1998 explorer EEC would be great, but I cannot find a solid strategy to pair with it.
Option 2 would be as follows
Same engine
VR distributer signal filtered thru an MSD 6AL tach output (12v square wave) into a TFI module for rpm/ ignition control.
The only unknown with option 2 is that there is no way to generate a CYL 1. Identifier and I have no idea how the EEC would respond without a CYL 1. Id. I would imagine one could force batch fire for the injectors. Obviously keeping sequential ignition thru the VR sensor output style distributor.

Re: EEC with no number 1. Identifier
if its a 4 cylinder engine why are you trying to use edis8 ?
best bet would be to use a single coil pack 4 cylinder ecu, in fact i just swapped a 2006 ranger ecu on a 95 ranger with 4v vw/volvo heads and a little t3 turbo, its the prdo0 strategy and im working on disassembling it now (along with a cqab1 98 explorer ecu im working on too)
I would recommend using the c1a1 ecu (91 4cyl mustang) to get going now, its the most well supported 4 cylinder ford ecu, you can get the def file from sailorbob

Re: EEC with no number 1. Identifier
The reason why I was shooting for EDIS 8 is to gain true sequential ignition on the 4 cylinder by implementing LS coil packs as the slaves.
I guess i could use a 4 cylinder EEC that had a strategy that used a single high/low cam signal for only cylinder number 1 with a 36-1 tooth wheel. I just don't know of one that exists.
Your swap worked nicely for you because you have the ability to use a hall sensor for your cam timing with a number 1 identifier. (Correct me if I'm wrong).
The issue I am having is I only have 3 options for a cam timing signal.
Option 1. Use a VR (output is an analog sine wave) that has no number 1 identifier. Take this signal and filter it so that a TFI and or EDIS module will accept.
Option 2. Use the points as an rpm signal into a module. ( not perfered) still left with no identifier.
Option 3. Use an aftermarket cam position sensor that coincidently matches a 5.0 explorer cam signal. It would be the one that has a single prong and goes high/low once it passes, signaling the EEC that NO. 1 has passed. This paired with a 36-1 tooth wheel would help keep track of TDC for NO. 1.
So should I just wait until there is an option for tuning a 5.0 EDIS style EEC that utilizes the same Cam position sensor as the Explorer?

Re: EEC with no number 1. Identifier
To clarify, the engine is an older "porsche/boxer" style engine. Flat H type.
Re: EEC with no number 1. Identifier
I realize I messed up in my description of the Explorer type cam sensor. It's a VR that only identifies number 1.

Re: EEC with no number 1. Identifier
afaik the cam input on all eec's are single signal only
why not just run it with no cam sensor and worry about it later
your taking something basic and simple and making it very difficult by overthinking it
just toss it together get it fired up and running first and worry about the quirks later
edis 8 has a different offset than a 4 cyl, let me know of you get that functioning correctly

Re: EEC with no number 1. Identifier
Thanks for your help, seriously. So running the C1A1 with EDIS4 paired with NO CPS will allow me to run the engine in a batch style configuration. Does that sound correct?
So in the future, could I retrofit a CPS from a 1994 V6 mustang? It's the closest to fitting with minimal machine work on the lathe.

Re: EEC with no number 1. Identifier
yea you can run any ecu with no cam sensor
afaik all ford cam inputs are just a low to high at 26* atdc
