newby here cant find strategies on BE should I swap EEC?

Post by more4u2c » Wed Oct 06, 2021 1:00 am

new here and new to tuning so new still waiting on my quarterhorse to arrive in the mail. as I wait im trying to make sure I have everything i need to get tuning right away. Now I dont know what computer strategy my ECC has as im currently traveling for work but from what ive researched my ECU might be 8LF, 8LG, or 8LD. my fox is a 1988 automatic model but its a MAF car from ford as it is a california car. Ford had to use MAF in 1988 for the California cars in order for it to be sold in the state in 1988. now when I look up the strategies in the BE program there are no 8lf, 8lg, or 8ld listed nor is there any listed online on motes website. so does this mean Ill need to swap out computer with one that is supported and if thats what i need to do what computer do I need to find? can a A9P be plug and play with my car? or would you suggest I get the O2 sensor harness for a manual and get a a9l manual computer instead. or is there a BE strategy for my 1 year earlier factory california MAF fox?

Don't confuse the catch code with the strategy. 8LD is a calibration catch code for the GUFA strategy. It's pointless to guess, though -- get the catch code off your EEC and post it back here if you need help finding the right strategy for it.

According to my basic research, it looks like 8lD(manual trans) and 8LF(auto trans) are in the same family and use the GUFA strategy.

Head on over here http://www.eecanalyzer.net/strategies and get the GUFA xlsx. I don't see an 8lF.BIN for download anywhere but that's fine, you don't need that -- you can read it out of your car. That important thing is to have the correct strategy which tells the tools how to parse the BIN file and present them to you as meaningful parameters to adjust.

Look around page 52 of this http://www.eecanalyzer.net/dl/BE2012/He ... 20Help.pdf
The “Ford” button reads the factory Ford
calibration from the ECU. When reading the
factory Ford calibration from the ECU the
ignition key should be ON with the engine OFF.
Once you have the QH installed, fire up BE with the GUFA strategy, get connected to the QH, and read the stock BIN.

Also note that with the Quarterhorse, you are no longer locked into the GUFA strategy. You could use GUFB if you wanted. GUF1, GUFA, and GUFB are exceptionally similar with GUFB having more features added to it than the previous 2. There are some addon features that have been taken from GURE to enhance GUFB as well such as the ability to control spark in a "better" way. Search the forum for FN1360 which lets you control spark based on RPM/Load, not just RPM/ECT (GUFB's spark table) or RPM only (GUFB's WOT Spark function). There are some caveats, but IMO, it's well worth the addition. And there's probably a few already-modified A9L.bin files out there to fast-track you to using FN1360 if you so desire to use it. I don't think anyone documented how to get FN1360 into GUF1 or GUFA.

If none of this makes sense to you right now, don't worry about it. Having FN1360 is not a requirement. It's just another tool in the toolbox that makes tuning a little easier.
