Can I clone/copy a EEC-IV eeProm 87C66

Post by Peter6000 » Sat Aug 12, 2023 8:18 am

I fixed my Marine EEC-IV by swapping the eeProm 87C66 to automotive junkyard ECU, Is there any way to make a copy or re flash the one I pulled out of the automotive unit? And if so what equipment do I need.
I have a PicKit and a old DataIO but cant find the 87C66.
I searched the forum for a few hours and I'm sure the info is here somewhere I'm just to blind to find it.
Thanks Peter

It is technically possible to get a read of the original ROM you removed. But it'd probably be far easier, depending on your intentions, to look for a *.bin file of the original tune by searching for it via its catch code.

It is likely too old to be _EE_prom. If it has the quartz window it is UV erasable. If not, it is likely to be one time programmable.

There is relevant info in these docs;

Please report back if you have any success.

Thanks to you all for the quick response, I found the .bin file for the ECU. I'm still looking for a programmer that could actually program the 87c66. I found a ton of information with your help.
As an alternative I might dig in to the J3 adapter.
I will post updates if I get it to work.

I am only aware of two people who have reprogrammed an eec-iv EPROM and AFAIK neither have been active in the eec tuning field for many years. The issue is not so much the programming hardware but the software to deal with the multiplexed address and databus these EPROMs use.

What EEC4 or vehicle did you find to get the 87C66 out of?

What does the label on your Boat EEC have on it, like hardware code or calibration #?

Thank you

I now have the ability to burn D8763 and 87C66 original ford EPROMS using a data I/O programmer from 1985 with a special adapter originally design for FORD. I can elaborate more if anyone is interested.

Well yeah, I want to know everything! Pictures of this adapter too, and where did you get it?

This is the S22 Data I/O programmer that I have, it's using firmware made for the FORD engineers back in the 80's that allows this copy of the 56K adapter to work. You can see in the third picture my last version of the adapter in a 3d printed cover.

I also made an adapter board for a BURN1 to allow it to directly read a loose chip. It routes all the connection as if you are using the MOATES F2A & F2E meant for sucking the tune from the EEC thru the J2 port.

The first picture is of the top of an original FORD 56K adapter

The second picture is of the bottom of an original FORD 56K adapter

I don't have an original but the very nice Person who does own it shared enough information for me to copy it.

Thank you

Attached are a couple pictures of one of my early versions of the Ford 56K adapter used on the Data I/O S22.

Attached are pictures of the Adapter I made to use the Moates BURN1 for READING ONLY of loose FORD Eproms. This has a 24 pin ZIf and is for reading the D8763 or the 87C66 chips directly. I select the F2E Ford EEC-IV Reader as the Supported chip type in the Moates Flash-&-Burn utility. I did this mainly to use during testing of making the copy of the FORD adapter for the Data I/O Series 22 programmer.

I can only attach 5 files per message it seems, so I'll put the last couple pics in another reply

Thank you

Attached are the last couple pics of my Moates BURN1 adapter project that lets me put a loose FORD Eprom directly in a Zif socket for reading only. These are pictures of the back side of my BURN1 adapter PCB and the 3d printed Cover.

Thank you for sharing.
Doing well to find the S22 and getting it all working.

Does the UV eraser still work on the S22?

How many have you erased and rewritten?
Cheers

I have only burned a few times each of the D8763 and 87C66 after I assembled the S22 adapter and then used the BURN1 with the adapter I made for it to verify the Data burned matched. I would do a compare of the file saved from the BURN1 buffer, with a Hex editor and they matched.

The Data I/O burn process takes 6 minutes for 87C66, it first tests the EPROM then Programs and last verifies the EPROM contents with the file I had previously loaded into the ram of the S22.

My S22 has a blank cover where the UV erase would be so I used a small external eraser. I’m now looking over things on the EEC to see if there is a possibility of leaving the Eproms soldered and shining UV into the chip while left in the EEC, with some extra protection for me eyes and then burning it through the J3 connector. If it looks feasible I’ll design an adapter with active buffers right at the J3 connector.

Thank you

This Data I/O S22 with the FORD 56K adapter is also able to electrically erase and program the 87F66. The 87F66 is an EEPROM that operates just like the UV erasable FORD ROMs. If anyone out there knows what EEC I could harvest one out of I would love to hear about that. I’ve looked inside quite a few EECIVs here in the USA, in Washington, and Oregon junkyards, but have never ran across one. I would guess something close to 95 or 96 but maybe Ford never used them.

Thank you
