Does anyone have a 400+ HP 96-98 era turbo Mustang GT?

Post by TrueMetalGeek » Wed Feb 20, 2013 2:25 am

Hi, new member here.
I got me a new (to me) project vehicle.
Found a decent deal on a 1996 Mustang GT with the 4.6

I'm going to do a single turbo project. As DIY as possible. No kit. All cutting, welding, etc.

Anyway I've done some other projects but none with real tuning.
Helped the bro in law turbo his 2,000 Dodge Ram.
Stock 360 engine. Single T4 Turbo. No tune. Just a high pressure fuel pump with a FMU on what I think was just 24Lb injectors. Maybe even the stock smaller ones.
It also had a MSD BTM to retard the timing in a lame way and a stock cummins intercooler we made fit this Ram 1500.
That got the 17 second truck into the mid 13's with less than $2,000 total spent! Did all piping home made.

I did a Saturn POS with THROTTLE BODY INJECTION and fueled it with extra injectors on a home made controller. It actually worked damn good at 7PSI but when I removed the muffler and boost crept up over 12PSI it detonated pretty bad enough times to crack two pistons. Never blew up tho.
Had no way to tune. No timing control. No real intercooler either. Tried Water/Meth.

Anyway just wanted to explain that I am a DYI and learn as you go.
Handy with electronics and anything mechanical.
This project will be more serious though than the last.

I've had the Mustang GT since Saturday and today I just ordered the Quarterhorse and the BE 2012 with dongle. Going to learn and have some FUN!
I'd like to have the ability to tune before I do the turbo.

Anyway, about the 400 HP question.

With my past projects and friends projects we got WAY MORE than 400HP out of stock V8's with no internal engine mods. Yet on the Mustang forums where I signed up to chit chat and ask about these cars I have several people doubting that 400HP is even possible without swapping heads, and all sorts of other mods. They think I am crazy! I'm not even wanting to argue with anyone. I was just surprised with all the doubt.
LOL! I'm no pro but I know 400HP is fairly conservative out of any boosted V8 as long as you get the tune close enough. If I was wanting 600 or more HP, THEN I'd understand internal engine mods to flow that.

So if anyone here has a 96-99 Mustang GT turbo let me know how it went.

400 with a turbo is not out of the ordinary. Specially if we are talking about flywheel horse power. You want it at the wheels, you'll need to turn the wick up. Those cars are only around 190-200 at the wheels from what I've seen.

Yeah I think people forget that it's called "forced induction".

Getting the air in is the challenge. Of course turbo and all can only make so much until you mys do porting, cams etc to get higher numbers but it's just funny how people get stuck on a box, believing on way you must do things.

But 400 can't be too difficult with any stock v8 and turbo.

Now I'm hearing hard numbers for fuel injectors and what power they can deliver. No exceptions. Lol.
For example he said 39# runs out at 500 hp, etc.
I dunno why the guy got upset when I was mearly saying that on the dodges we tuned with high pressure pump and fmu on STOCK injectors 24# or whatever it was and was near 500 hp. So you can't just say this injector does this, this one that.
I understand of course at stock fuel pressure you change injectors and tune. That's my plan with the mustang and the quarterhorse I ordered.

Should have it tomorrow.

I got Binary Editor 2012 for now.

Not sure what else is a must before I get to play around.

you can put 600 to the wheels with 19s if u want so long that u can crank the pressure enough and not have it lock or the pump stop

the hard numbers u hear are of base fp

I think most people agree that FMUs and tuning don't go well together. The EEC assumes a constant injector slope behavior and FMUs make that not true. FMUs skew the slope of injectors to not be a slope at all, but rather have a different behavior at boost as compared to vacuum.

However one thing you can do is use an adjustable FPR and dial up the pressure so that you get the same fuel flow at boost as you would get with an FMU. The difference is the FPR will keep the slope as a straight slope.

The catch is that boosting FPR pressure way up PLUS really high super/turbo air boost pressures is a double-assault on a fuel pump(s) so you better have a fuel pump capable of delivering under the fuel line pressures this configuration might run.

Exactly what I was telling the guys.
And I'm not a pro or anything, but very hands on and diy.

With my el cheapo Saturn SC1 TBI Sohc project car I ran a fmu on the stock pump to raise pressure to about the 60psi the stock pump seemed to manage AND ran extra injectors off a home made circuit using a microchip microprocessor.

It was fun but limited.

Indeed.
When I was comparing the two methods I of course meant fmu and booster pump with STOCK tune and engine controls vs. Being able to tune and having stock pressure. Not both fmu and tune at once.

Are you saying these cars had stock 96-98 2v engines?

Hey about that, have you achieved any of those over 400HP on completely STOCK blocks, cranks, rods, etc in the early 96-98 4.6 non PI engines?

Oh and the UPS driver came to my house. Then started to drive off without coming to the door.
My wife caught him and he said he couldn't find my package on his truck.

I just got a phone call from UPS. The package was on the truck anyway.
So the driver is on his way back with my Quarthorse and BE Software + Dongle. :-)

Hey. I got the Quarterhorse installed.

Image
It fit nice in my EEC. No bending electronic components.

I have Binary Editor 2012 installed and registered with my dongle.

Now so far I am using CDAN4.xls with a ZXA4.bin to use BE.
I read the eec and wrote it to the QH and the car drives.

But for some reason the OBD-II DTC panel and Dashboard, etc don't seem to do anything yet.

Maybe I missed some settings or something but in the Stragety lookup excel sheet I downloaded I looked up my EEC-V which is a F6ZF-KC (ZXA2) and it shows a CDAN3 stragety.
Is that a problem?

I'm also on the verge of buying the recommended POPS RACING defs but am waiting to hear back if I can use CDAN4 or need CDAN3.
