New to tuning, introduction and here's my goals

Post by kickass2k1 » Thu Apr 16, 2015 2:19 pm

Hello everyone. I've had 87-93 mustangs for a while now, each almost all stock. Well, I'm finally getting around to having time to play with them more as they aren't my daily driver anymore. I got into teaching myself basic electronics not long ago, and want to put my electronics hobby together with my car hobby. I'm taking the dive into tuning, and am now the proud new owner of a Moates Quarterhorse and licensed Tunerpro. It was so exciting when I got it to (finally) work, and could see my engine data on a laptop screen, and then I changed the max_rpm value to 3000, clicked a button, then stepped on the gas and saw the car not rev above 3k - amazing!

Obviously I'm at the beginning of a long, long journey. I've been reading everything I can on this site as well as the stuff on efidynotuning until my brain hurts. The more I read, the more I find out what the quarterhorse is capable of. I want to see some of the more unique things that people have done, that the quarterhorse made possible. For instance, right now I have an 88 5.0 (still SD) that I put a 4R70W behind (after the AOD died for the 2nd time) and a US Shift controller. How lofty of a goal is it to replace the ECU to one that can run both the engine and trans? What about coil pack ignition also? Has anyone done a nice writeup or how-to for unique stuff like this?

It seems like 95% of the stuff I find say how to do something in BE. Did I make a mistake by choosing tunerpro instead of BE? The tunerpro ford forum is fairly empty, and not much on this one either. I was wondering if anyone else was a QH/tunerpro user too, maybe we could have a seperate subforum in the tuning section for tunerpro users :-p

Like I said, I have a long journey of learning ahead. Please post some links to unique things you have done, or writeups you've found, so I can get more ideas on what all is possible. Thanks!
-88 mustang 5.0 LX, 4r70w w/us shift controller -daily driver duty
-The Drift/Racecar -88 mustang gt 5spd, A9L ecu, 89 mustang MAF, full exhaust, '03 cobra IRS w/4.10 gears, MM coilovers, MM k member, custom front drift control arms
-66 mustang work in progress - hope to eventually have a efi 5.0 with coil pack ignition and a 4r70w in it, all controlled by a single ecu

tunerpro doesnt appear to have as much users since no one ever has issues with tunerpro, it just works, I use tunerpro for all my ford tuning

tunerpro also works with many other platforms as well and has been around quite a while, so no you didnt make any mistakes there lol

BE on the other hand always has issues on my laptop, everytime an update comes out mine freaks and things that previously worked fine dont anymore, I gave up on BE myself, its not aimed toward the DIYer anymore

EDIS swaps have been going on since the millenium

Trans swaps too, theres a trans swap write up and an ignition swap write up on efidynotuning

After reading up on so much stuff the past week, every time I think I answer 1 question, I learn something new and then have 2 more questions. Also, It annoys me how many unfinished posts there are! (Decipha, you ever get that returnless system on your 91 titanium working?)

I came across another posy from a few months ago where cgrey8 asked if there was some place that had a list of eec's and the hardware they support, of which the reply was no. I think this would be something very beneficial that we could create in a post on this board. Heck, I'll volunteer to put all the info together in one easy to read document. One of the reasons I ask is eventually I want an EEC that will run an 98+ 4r70w (without having to change out a selenoid inside the trans) and wondering if theres a way to do distributorless ignition without an external edis box (which was the only way shown in the 2 docs in the tech section). Ive read up on things like HE vs VR cam sensors... All this info of what EEC supports what hardware would be nice to have in one place!
