New Quarterhorse not talking to the EEC

Post by tzbfwt » Sat May 21, 2016 7:36 pm

OK - just got the QH last week. Followed all the install instructions - I think the J3 is nice and clean - shiny silver pads, doesn't look like any of the conformal coating/grease is left on it, scrubbed it gently with a blue scotchbrite pad, electrical cleaner after... but it doesn't seem to talk to the EEC.

I'm using BE - selected Mode 2 - loaded an A9P calibration is all 8 slots - that seems to work fine. Tried to harvest the Ford tune - and all I get is Zeros... (EEC not powered - just sitting on my desk... is that normal?) Do you need to power up the EEC to harvest the tune?

So I plugged it into the car - turn the key - and it's like the EEC is in limp mode - fuel pump runs forever, car runs like crap. Tried this QH on two different A9Ps - same result. Car starts fine with QH unplugged from J3...(tested on both A9Ps)

So what am I doing wrong? Is the QH dead? Seems to talk to my laptop (and I can write tunes to it) but all the dashboard data is blank - in car and on the bench.

HELP - please tell me I'm doing something STOOOPID !!!

thanks

Jim

Re: Newbie - why is my New Quarterhorse not talking to the E

OK - I found the Moates page about Harvesting Stock Ford Tunes - and they confirm the EEC must be powered in order to harvest a tune... so that explains why the QH isn't talking on the bench - but doesn't explain why it isn't talking while plugged into the Bronco...

Communication between the PC and the QH seem fine over USB - I can load tunes no problem.

I can only find posts about cleaning the J3 port - but mine seems clean enough - and I don't want to sand thru thru to the copper. I could blame on a bad trace on the A9P board - but I've tried two A9Ps - both with the same result - it acts likes the tune is blank - and I get no dashboard data...

if you updated BE lately that could be the problem its popped up a few times recently

try tunerpro rt and the a9l2 it will let you know quickly if its a hardware or software issue, sounds like the later

Well Michael, I'm sure you hear this all the time from your customers but YOU WERE RIGHT !!!

Loaded up Tuner Pro RT, followed your Getting Started Page, loaded the GUFB strategy & your A9L2 binary - and the Bronco started just fine... It took one key on/off to make the Fuel pump stop running - but this A9P box I'm using has two fuzzy/corroded blue caps on it that are LONG OVERDUE for replacement - so that might be why it takes a while to get happy.

In any case, the QH connected right up to Tuner Pro - and I was able to look at the standard dashboard data. The TPS reads about .95V, the MAF about 1.0, the idle about 725, the HEGOs are toggling... everything seems happy.

Also kudos on the A9L2 cal - this is the first non-stock cal I've ever had in the Bronco - and it already drives WORLDS BETTER than the stock A3M1 box I was using. And I've adjusted nothing in it yet - and it's running a 94 Lightning 351W with a stock 55mm mustang MAF, with Mustang upper and truck 351W lower... I'm guessing that I might need to do a little adjusting ??? :)

In any case, back to my BE Problem - what's the work-around? I DID UPDATE it yesterday before I ran it... so I guess I need to figure our what older version I need that doesn't have this issue... What's the best way to get BE Tech support - just email Clint? The version number is 5.77. Most recent note in Help file is Build 78, Release date 5-8-2016.

Thanks again Michael - you've given me hope that I can actually make this $hit work.

Clint dialed in remotely and helped me out - once I had the ECU powered up, I was able to download the Ford tune into one of the 8 slots.

This EEC is acting funny - the first key on it acts like no tune is loaded, but if you keep it running for a minute, it's like the EEC wakes up and starts working - it will idle and fuel pump will do the start/stop when keyed on.

My dashboard issue was not having anything selected for a payload - oops... Rookie mistake.

What did I learn from my first tuning session? One of my HEGOs is dead/very lazy 0.0 to 0.3 at best... Oops

Time to get the basics right - then load that A9L2 tune again... Thanks Decipha.
