Looking for some help in evaluating pipe size for a slot MAF

Post by ChsReb » Fri Jun 10, 2016 1:41 pm

I’m planning an upgrade from a stock 302 to a 408 with aluminum high flowing heads. Everything I have read says use a post 2005 slot MAF.

Lots of discussions about Slot MAF sensors and just as many opinions about how much air one can flow for a given size pipe. Get it to big you lose your low end resolution and low RPM flow could make for idle to low speed cruise issues. I've got one 3" SLOT MAF curve that is just slightly better than a stock 95 GT MAF and another 3" Slot MAF curve that goes beyond 2600 kg/hr. I know inlet and exit conditions are everything for a trouble free install and correct readings.

Anybody know how big the cross section is for the new coyotes? I'm hearing 440 HP so whatever they're running should be big enough.

A couple questions for those with practical experience here:
How much air can a slot MAF accurately measure without pegging in a 3”,3.5”, or 4" pipe?
Are all the Ford V8 post 2005 Slot MAFs the same?

I’m buying the sensor and the pipe it goes in for a 95 GT.

I’m looking at an optimistic 500HP at the crank. This will be a street vehicle and no “Drags” are planned.

Best Regards,

You should be able to find your answer here: http://www.efidynotuning.com/maf.htm

Thanks.

That's where I got the 2600+ kg/hr data from. If that data is accurate, problem solved. 3" housing is the way to go.

Just verifying with the world of "Been there. Done That."

Just to be clear, the hpx slot is not a stock slot sensor. That's why you see two different curves.

I don't know how many different generations of slot sensors Ford ever made. But it is worth note that you can increase any slot sensor's capacity just by increasing the pipe diameter. You probably already know that. However you can begin to get into a diameter pipe that's just not practical. IMO, a 4" pipe is a bit unweildy to try to work with under a cramped engine bay. But if that's what you need to get the flow measure your application needs, that's what you have to do...OR you can go aftermarket. That's the value of the HPX slot sensor. It can accurately measure higher flowrates in smaller diameter pipes so you can stay with a 3" pipe where a stock slot sensor would've maxed out. Does that better answer the issue? Or did I just reiterate the obvious?

I'm not sure how much you are looking to spend but I'm using a PMAS MH95 3000. I'm very happy with it. It has a slot type sensor inside, comes with housing and pigtail, and will leave you room to grow. http://www.pmas-maf.com/product/mh95-95 ... -kghr-maf/

Thanks guys. You're giving me all I need to consider. 8)

This is an upgrade in any case to get ready for my 408. Primarily a Street driven vehicle for sure. The 200K 302 isn't going to last forever.

In this area, the 1/4 mile track was more valuable as a housing development and the one remaining 1/8 mile track isn't anything to write home about. The next option is to drive to Orangeburg, SC or Augusta, GA. (I'm in Charleston,SC)

Guess my choices are a Stock Ford sensor and a 4" housing or a HPX in a 3" housing. Considering the size of the MAF exterior housing in a 95 Mustang, space isn't the issue.

Thanks. Got some time to think on it.

I'd love to hear from someone with a Stock MAF sensor in a 4" housing or somebody with a new coyote.

Anybody out there ever tried one of these?

The air straightener seems like a real good idea.

I'm using a 4" MAF housing with a gen 1 slot sensor AND Air Straightener. The K&N filter is a truncated Conical unit with inner and outer filter. I'm still dialling in the MAF , but it is PLENTY big enough even if i DOUBLE the airflow with the 408.
