2.3 turbo. Constantly rich at idle

Anything about Ford EEC tuning. TwEECer and Moates questions dominate, but there's some SCT and OBD-II knowledge too.

2.3 turbo. Constantly rich at idle

Post by Pwrshft99 » Mon Aug 05, 2019 8:34 am

Have a 2.3 turbo converted to OBD2 in a 96 Ranger. I have both a TwEECer and SCT advantage software. I've ran both an 80mm MAF and currently an OEM slot. My injectors are 42lbs.

No matter where I make tuning changes, the truck idles at 11 to 1 on the wideband. The A/F responds to other changes I makes throughout the power band but at idle, always excessively rich.

Could this be a sign of cheap injectors not opening and closing at idle like they should?

More details about how you have the tune setup would be helpful. For instance,
Are you running force Open Loop or are you allowing Closed Loop at idle?
Is the tune reporting that it is in Closed Loop at idle?
If it is, does the HEGO switch rich/lean/rich while at idle?

If you are forcing OL, then there may be tune related reasons why your fuel tables are being ignored in favor of some idle-specific open loop fueling. I'm just not familiar with 2.3L strats to know if that's a possibility.

Is the O2 sensor upstream or downstream from the turbo? If it's downstream, it could be cooling off at idle.
