Introducing myself

Post by JD1964 » Thu Aug 08, 2024 5:26 am

Hello everyone. I'm John and I'm in central Maryland. I'll be attempting to self train on using Quarterhorse, Jaybird, Binary editor and the related stuff. I'll do my best to consume all the available information and learn what I can to avoid showering you with questions that have been answered many times already.

Here's a little about my situation. I'm not entirely new to self tuning but I still consider myself a novice, especially with EEC IV. My previous experience which I consider successful was using Tuner Pro RT, Flashhack and EEHack on a 94 LT1 / 4L60E combo we have swapped into a 79 Malibu Wagon. The car I'll be learning to self tune this time will be my 92 Mustang LX. It's a 302 with a Vortec V3 Sci. I'm working with an A9L that has been professionally refurbished with new capacitors and whatnot. Some detail on the combo is in my sig.

The hardware I have was bought from a tuner that went out of business a while back. It includes QH, Jaybird, BE and includes the full license dongle. So far I have the BE up and running and confirmed the license is valid and functional. I have also connected the QH to the laptop and see that BE recognizes it. There is even a tune still on it from the previous owner. I have also bought a Moates J3 chip and I still have the SCT chip that was used to previously tune the car. In addition to this stuff I also have "The Ultimate Ford EFI Tuning Guide" from Lasota Racing. I'm about 1/4 way through reading that so far.

The LX had been previously tuned via SCT chip and it was done by mail so the guy took my details, loaded a base tune and sent it to me. It worked very nicely and after I got it up and running good I had the car ran on a local dyno. It put down 400 RWHP at 5640 rpm. My problem started with the 30lb injectors that were being stretched to their limits. The final straw was one of the injectors actually went bad. I'll spare you the details. I've since changed injectors to green top 42 lb Ford Lightning injectors and calibrated Pro M MAF. The MAF was ordered including a data sheet which I was told will simplify the tuning process since I can input all that into BE.

So, that's my story and I need to get this thing re-tuned to play nicely with the new 42lb injectors. I want to use Jaybird to pull the base tune that is already in the SCT chip. I hope to save that file then put it into BE and modify it for the 42's and new MAF, flash it to QH, put it in the car and do some data logging for fine tuning. I'll then probably transfer the tune either back to SCT or Moates J3 so I can put the QH on the shelf for safe keeping and future use.

Sorry for the long winded intro. Do you see any concerns with my strategy? Do you have any suggestions or advice?

Thanks in advance for any input. John

Sounds like you have a plan and a reasonable approach. Of course, there will be issues, mostly likely those will be with solving driveability issues with the tune. Those seem to be the worst. The issues most people struggle with initially are idle and return-to-idle because well if you can't get idle stable, then it makes it hard to get data to solve the other issues especially if your data is from road-driving.

You have a WB so dialing in startup, WOT, and other OL fueling conditions should be possible. It'll be a lot easier if you can get it tied into your datalogs so you can see what WB values were along-side your other datalogged values.

Incidentally, the previous tune on the SCT chip had zero driveability or idle issues. After finishing the dyno pulls, the dude at the shop said he wouldn't change a thing. He was surprised how much power the combo put down. I'm hoping that data will lace in good when I transfer it to the QH. My PLX wideband has an output for data logging so I should be able to mesh that in to the process. If it wasn't for that single injector failing, I probably wouldn't be here. The 30's were stretched but I got what I needed to stay in the high 11's with the AF ratio at WOT by increasing the fuel pressure about 5psi. However, because of the single failed injector, I wanted a new set of injectors and went up to the 42's.

What program do you recommend to use Jaybird with for pulling and storing the BINs from the SCT and whatever the previous owner has on the QH? A shareware program hopefully...

Here's the dyno pull
