Anything about Ford EEC tuning. TwEECer and Moates questions dominate, but there's some SCT and OBD-II knowledge too.

TwEECer on the Focus?

Post by spankenstein » Tue Feb 04, 2003 12:23 pm

I had emailed before about support for the Focus. Are there any updates or an ETA on that?

We have yet to begin any work on the Focus, but should have it supported sometime this summer. I still need someone to either ship their EEC to me or a local owner to come by and let me read their EEC. This will be the starting point and is required before we can get started.

I was really hoping on the February date you sent me in an email. There are quite a few people clamoring for ANYTHING that is cheaper than the Pectel T2.

Me too, I am dying to get the EECV RT stuff complete, but until then we cannot go any further. It is already 3 months overdue and we think we might have it whooped but we have not started the BETA phase yet.

If you or anyone you know has a Focus in the Houston area, or if their car is down for a while and can ship us their EEC then we can at least get a binary -- though I may have a source, but they have not responded yet.

I posted in the Forced Induction and Texas forums. I'm hoping someone pulls through on this one.

Would you need a bin of every possible code as well? There are quite a few on the Focus (6+).

Hey,

Focus ecu's for the zetec and spi equipped focus can be had off www.car-part.com for around $50 and up +shipping. I have an spi focus and would be willing to buy an ecu and have it shipped it to you. I'm assuming that locations of the data are the same between the ecu's for different engines and the different codes they have so hopefully you only need one ecu and would be able to provide tweecer support for both engines.

Also, would you want a manual or automatic ecu? I would think the automatic one but again just a guess. Let me know what to do since I'm very interested in this product and the sooner I get the fuel/ignition mangement solved the sooner I can put a turbo in my car.

Probably one of the best things you can do to help is collect a list of year, model and EEC. This will allow us to see which are most prevelant and should focus our attention on those first. If you can get me one or two Focus & SVT processors, I will be glad to re-imburse you for the cost, shipping, etc...

Data addresses can change from year to year or mid-year (sans 99 Contour). Most likely you will have strategy for each year and the SVT may be a seperate family too.

Really does not matter if it is auto or manual, Ford writes their code to enable or disable the AODE features so any processor can do either.

Could I possibly get with someone that burns chips and get a bin dump? Or maybe even a Ford dealer that I could send to you?

My near future plans were dependent on the TwEECer so I'm really wanting to help out as much as I can.

I was speaking to Corky Bell today (I'm buying my turbo kit from him) and in talking about the kit and fuel management I mentioned the TwEECer and he was really interested in it. I gave your phone number on the website.

He is still looking for solid fuel management for the Focus kit and until then is shipping them to only run 4-5psi and offering large warning about running higher unless you have means to tune it.

Anything you can do to help facilitate me getting a copy of the most abundent or most wanted EEC for the Focus, will be most helpful. Once again, I will pay for a couple of functioning processors that I can get data from and be able to run on my test bench. The easiest method may be to get a local Focus owner or two, to come by and let me read their EEC. It only takes 30-60 minutes, depending on how much of a beeyotch it wants to be to clean.

Where is the EEC located on the focus?? Kick panel, engine compartment??

the ecu is located just above the kick panel on the pass side. It's pretty easy to get to if you open the glove box.

This link will show you it in great detail.

http://www.myfordfocus.com/how-to/pcm.htm

Once you have the ecu's or the bins can you give a rough estimate as to how long before you have anything anyone can test ? By summer or sooner?

Right now I have a list of twelve:

Code: Select all

+------+
| code |
+------+
| ZYF5 |
| SZR6 |
| LFQ0 |
| JFA8 |
| HFU9 |
| JFA7 |
| XAU0 |
| JFA6 |
| FVV7 |
| JFR6 |
| PBM1 |
| PLN2 |
+------+
And The following combinations:

Code: Select all

+------+------+-------+------+
| year | body | trans | code |
+------+------+-------+------+
| 2000 | LX | ATX | FVV7 |
| 2000 | SE | MTX | JFA8 |
| 2000 | ZTS | MTX | JFA7 |
| 2000 | ZX3 | ATX | HFU9 |
| 2000 | ZX3 | MTX | JFA6 |
| 2000 | ZX3 | MTX | JFA8 |
| 2001 | LX | MTX | PLN2 |
| 2001 | ZX3 | ATX | JFR6 |
| 2001 | ZX3 | MTX | LFQ0 |
| 2001 | ZX3 | ATX | SZR6 |
| 2001 | ZX3 | ATX | XAU0 |
| 2001 | ZX3 | MTX | ZYF5 |
| 2002 | ZTS | MTX | PBM1 |
+------+------+-------+------+
JFA* should be all the same. I know that form SuperChips and DiabloSport that there is one bin file that will work on the the JFA variations.

ZYF5 and LFQ0 are very common for 2001 MTX cars.

Any progress on this? I'm also very interested since no one else really seems to be able to provide us with a cost effective management system..

Let us know of improvements.. only thing that worries me is that there's so many different ecu codes.. hopefully mine will be included :P

I have been looking for ecu's and I have a line on an spi ecu from a fellow jetter..an FVV9 from a 2000 auto, I can only get zetec ecu's from car-part.com or local yards and there are no manual zetec foci in my area that I know of. Car-part.com doesn't show you the codes, they show you the ecu id number which is different. If you wanted specifically a jfa8 code ecu it would take a while because I would have to do alot of calling! If you wanted just a 2000 focus ecu from a zetec car than it would be easy. Let me know what you want me to do. Haven't looked for an svt ecu yet.

Actually, that would be fine as I can run the binary from the other processers on the FVV9. I have an FVV7 binary that I got off of a FORD calibration CD and can get a few more bins, now I need the processor to run them on.

I just e-mailed him the address. Don't know how soon he will ship it out but I'll let you know when it's under way. You can re-imburse me when you get it and have it working, I gave him $60 for the ecu and shipping.

Hey one more thing..you said that the ford ecu can have the auto code enabled or disabled. I plan on swapping from an auto to a manual on my car. It has been shown that an auto ecu will run a manual car but throw codes everywhere. Baring any wiring differences the ecu's might have and I will have to deal with will it be possible to shut off the auto code with the tweecer so it "acts" like a manual car's ecu. That would be a huge help and convenience. No need to swap ecu's and go through the whole pats key programming process with the dealer then.

Mark,

I appreciate your help with this, but I need to remind you and the other Focus owners that this will not happen overnight. I still have the 99+ cars to finish before I can go full bore on the Focus. In fact I may RT capabilities for the Focus before I have tuning capability. Just let it run its course and I will try to give an update when I make decent advances.
Best regards,

Hey mike, no problem. I wasn't expecting it to happen overnight. Actually, I'm hoping you will have something within three or four months. If not by then, then I'll just use the haltech e6k I have sitting in a box in my garage most likely. I might use it anyway to ease swapping in a manual tranny but we'll see. This is basically my last hope at an easy way for engine management.
