309rwhp/334rwtq NA GT40P Mustang. Got ole' TOOSLO back on th

Post by TooSlo86 » Sat Sep 17, 2011 11:32 pm

So, after the 7 hours I spent driving all over South-Eastern MI today picking up parts from a couple of forum members (THOR84GT & 1mean85gt) I went over to my buddies place where they were having a Dyno Party. Mind you, 98% of the vehicles there were nasty Cummins diesels, but what-ever. Anyway, since I wanted to get a baseline before I installed the aluminum driveshaft and a set of roller rockers I picked up today (knowing I was having this same dyno at my place in 2wks) I said the hell with it and auntie-d up. Damn am I ever glad I did!

Last year at Back to the Bricks on Livernois Dyno prior to me "really" using the Moates Quarterhorse the car put down 284rwhp/303rwtq in STD correction. Mind you, this is a 125K+ mile factory untouched Ford built 1997 Explorer GT40P LONG BLOCK (that means heads have never been off to port) with my cam, pushrods, retainers, valve springs, upper/lower EFI intake, yada, yada, your normal bolt on stuff. So what did it do today you ask???? Oh wait, you don't care.....well, I'm sure that there are plenty of NA 12 second guys out there, hell, 13 second guys on aluminum heads, that care, or will give me absolute s__t about this as I've already seen at the track so, I will entertain, cuz isn't that what all this is about anyhow? Serious as a heart attack though, she blew my mind and laid down 309/334 at the wheels. The dyno owner and his business partner were blown away since they are both fox body guys and the one guy said he was a bit depressed since his TFS headed 302 wouldn't make those #'s. Am I getting a big head? Nope, just realizing the fruit of my labors over the years of constantly tweaking/tuning it. S__T is bad arse.

Do you doubt it? Come on up to my place Oct. 1st for MY dyno day. Anyone interested please pm me and I'll get you the info. I would REALLY like to see some more Mustangs represent up here! And lest you think that I only want Mustangs, I am a converted die hard F-Body freak, and my brother in law with his '02 WS-6 will be there, along with some old school Buick guys, man I could care less what it is, as long as it makes some noise up there while the rest of us sit back and drink beer!

Excellent numbers! Are these SAE or STD numbers? What was the correction factor? Where is the air fuel curve?

Thanks, that what Chris (business partner) was saying about his too.

Don't know if you are being serious or sarcastic, but yea, his shop is there but it's a mobile dyno.
Are these SAE or STD numbers?
SAE
What was the correction factor
Forgot to ask, but I will get the file Monday. He did tell me that in STD that it worked out to 312HP so I could "compare" from Livernois dyno last year.
Where is the air fuel curve?
Not available for this one, but I watched it on my w/b and it ran 12.4-12.5 through the entire upper sweep.

You should just ask for the DRF files for your pulls, then download the viewer from the dynojet website.

I'm also curious if your EEC calculated load values were different on the dyno vs the track. My dyno load was about 6% less than the track.

I had full intentions of making a couple changes between pulls but when I hooked it up to my laptop and started the datalogger the car hicupped/backfired and then wouldn't start until I removed all banks of tunes and re-wrote a new one. The car was not on, and the ignition wasn't on when I hooked it up either. We spent about 20 minutes up there dinking around till I realized the only thing I had done was trying to datalog. The bad part was that the tune that I have been running for the past couple of months that I was so happy with wasn't saved on my laptop, it was on my thumbdrive which I didn't have so I had to throw a more un-refined tune on it. Seemed to be ok though! Most of the changes were just drive-ability related anyhow.

I'll ask him tomorrow, he did mention something about sending me a file Monday so...as far as the calculations in the d/l, if you read the above you'll see. I'm not sure if it even captured anything since I never stopped the d/l.

New #'s with FRPP roller rockers and FRPP aluminum driveshaf

Post by TooSlo86 » Mon Oct 03, 2011 4:35 pm

Well we did it, we had our dyno party this past saturday. I got the FRPP roller rockers in and the FRPP driveshaft. In the end they were worth 8hp and 12lb/ft, this wasn't just at peak, with the pulls overlayed I picked up throughout the range. Granted this was done on different days but same dyno, same correction factor (SAE). So now the #'s are 317rwhp and 346rwtq. It was a great day, we had a total of 9 cars and trucks run, and man there were some cool ones! My poor little 302 was 2nd from the bottom as far as HP/TQ, but it was also the smallest engine on there too. I did get 2 good datalogs from the pulls also.

Very cool, and I like the info on the improvement from the mods. 8hp/12tq at the wheels is pretty nice improvements for rockers and a driveshaft.

Thanks, I'm kinda thinking about starting a thread for the difference in the addition of the rollers/driveshaft as when I was looking into it I couldn't find any solid info on the topic, just alot of here-sea. I just wish I could have kept it all on the same day! I know it's the same dyno but any time you add a variable there is more room for doubt.

Very nice. The combo in my sig made identical numbers to yours. Same reaction by the shop owner, TFS top end kit made less than mine. This was before a tune running on the stock a9l.

I don't know how to post pics but I do have an image of the chart.

I don't get how people make such numbers some times but good for you. My 87 motor with unknown miles with 165s, explorer intake with lower ported, 1.7 crane rollers, stock cam, typical bolt ons and no tuning did 282/306 at around 90 degrees. Seen several people eclipsing with p head combos. I barely broke into the 13s with 4.10s and no grip street tires but I picked up 7 mph and dropped 11/10 from previous times with stock intake to oil pan.

With new cars these days, breaking into the 12s is not fast so even with a vortech slapped on, my bragging rights are still poop

They are some good numbers.. I have a very similar combo but only got 260 hp and 285tq on the dyno... What injectors are you running? What cam?

Thanks, I run an Anderson Ford Motorsports B-21 Blower cam and FRPP 24lb injectors, and alot of time refining the entire package.

I think the big difference in yours and FoxRodder is the cam, both of you guys are running a stock cam, but FoxRodder did 282/306 on a stock cam, my very first time on a dyno with this cam before tuning I only made 284/303, that's how far this has come since tuning and a couple of small additions. Even before tuning I still picked up 2 tenths in the 1/4 with just going from the stock cam to this one.

I really need to get my car tuned right.. It is running, but I think there is more that can be done.. Driveabilty is questionable..idle is a little screwy too.. I just don't have time to mess with it.

What helps me is that during the summer I drive this car 85 miles a day, so I can monitor/datalog it on the way to work, make an adjustment, drive it home, make another adjustment. I'm typically refining something on a daily basis. Once I'm happy with that, then I move onto something else that I need to learn in terms of tuning it. This site is the ONLY way I have been able to have a clue at what I'm doing. I was cruising this forum even before the Moates, just trying to take it all in, it's hard without the ability to apply it but at least it's in the back of your mind already.

On the idle, that is by far my weakness. I've hesitantly tried and have been 1/2 way successful as it idles decent, just not to my liking. I really need to dedicate myself to this after I install the new maf this winter.

There is alot of guys on here with endless knowledge and I'll be the first to admit, I'm not one of them, this tuning with a laptop and not wrenches is still new to me but it is great not having to pay someone to strap the car on a dyno, put a generic tune on it that isn't street friendly at all and call it good.

Yes I agree.. I am not a fan of paying someone 500$ to tune my car and have no driveability..I am not even gonna touch the idle until my fuel is dialed in.. Cause it will change..

Do you use EEC analyzer at all to help you refine your tune?

Nope, I use a whole lot of Microsoft Excel! I haven't purchased EA since my o2 logic is bad in my eec and I'm pretty sure alot of that would use the o2 data. I can't even use the maf fitting tool in BE. I force OL and try to be spot on under all conditions in my tune for fueling needless to say. I have to believe being able to use EA would make life ALOT easier though.

I don't know if you have a tune yet, or how far you have gotten, but you only have minor changes from the stock setup. I would just update the MAF transfer function, as that is really the only item from stock that is different. I don't know what that transfer table looks like, but I have heard its very close to the 55mm sensor (but I don't know that for a fact.)

Once you get that going, all you need to do is drive, and datalog.

I do have somewhat of a tune.. But I was thinking about starting over. Decipha was messing with my car for a while. We kept finding small issues that were messing with the tune (o2 sensor wiring was messed up, dirty Maf, ) then my son was born in July so It never really got finished.. It runs and drives but could be better I think. Now that my son is getting older I think I will be able to spend some time working on the tune. And yes the 94-95 transfer is pretty close to the 55 mm.
