Finally got back to the track Sunday

Post by TooSlo86 » Tue Apr 24, 2012 8:32 am

Finally got it together enough to take it out after a long winter of drivetrain changes. Really came down to crunch time Saturday but, even under the rushed circumstances and just hoping to be able to drive the car onto the trailer at the end of the day I didn't fair too bad for a shakedown weekend.

Mind you, this is not an aluminum headed built stroker motor so I'll be a bit slow for alot of you this poor thing is a j/y special I dropped in back in '06 from a 95k mile exploder. Didn't even pull the GT40P's off, just stuffed it full of my cam and springs! After I get this dialed in the custom cam will go in and we'll see what it's good for.

Ran a bunch of 12.3x, 12.4x's at high 110's and 111's, even had a 111.59 mph pass. Just couldn't get the car to leave hard, either bogged or spun. Used to leave at 6k+ but I was doing good to get it to hook at 4k this time. Even on this 12.29 pass I put the car sideways to the tune of a crappy 1.75 60 ft. That's on top of the fact that my great running tune from last year wouldn't run for crap! The car was idling so damn rich it kept stalling trying to stage it but I only figured that out Saturday night and didn't have time to get the tune down. At least now the car leaves level instead of twisting! So, I've got a few bugs to work out still, I would say the car still has more to give if I could just get it to work. I think I had my passenger side shock and airbag too firm as in the videos it would hook then loose traction on the rebound. The gears put me through the traps at a perfect 6300 rpm. Twice I bounced off the rev limiter right through the stripe so I had to bump it up to 6400. The plus is that this was in street trim vs my prior best of 12.44 with open headers and no P/S, so I'm happy for now.
If the vids don't show let me know as I can't see them here ;-)

Good to see you back. What air pressure are you using in your tires and air bag? What tires are you using out back? What shock/spring combo do you have out back as well?

Thanks, glad it's the season again

I ended up with 13lbs in the tires, last year I ran with 22! I started at 10 in the bag and ended up at a max of 35 but that was due to listening to 4000lb Buick guys. The tires are MT ET Drag Radials which hooked damn hard last year with the 3.73's, not so much when multiplying the torque with the 4.30's. Rear springs are just stockers with a coil or 2 cut off, can't remember. I run Koni adjustables all around. I used to be able to set the fronts to firm to keep it from going nose up but had to leave them at full soft to get the transfer this time.

I was just starting to get the feel for leaving by the end of the day and know I can get it to work once I have more time to play with settings. I really didn't think the car was lifting the nose at all this time out, it felt like it was leaving flat to me, then I watched all of my videos and realized it must have just been since it wasn't twisting so bad anymore. I'm going to get my tune straightened out and then head back out starting with a much softer right rear and see what I can get out of it.

I would recommend ditching the air bags in the rear. I feel the create too much coil bind and dont allow the springs to fully compress properly. I think you would be better off with 4cyl. springs if your on a budget over the cut stockers. Run the rears full soft and the fronts full hard. The fact that you lost traction after the initial hit shows that the airbag in the r/r is creating bind in the spring by geting pinched between the coil. Just my .02...lol

I just have one bag on the right rear, but I can see how it could create problems on free travel.

Now why would you think I'm on a budget  I would like to get ahold of some 4cyl springs but these were good enough to get me out of the miserable eibachs I had at the time.

My theory on the rebound loss of traction is that it was allowed to compress upon initial shock but since I had it on full firm on that corner the shock just couldn't expand fast enough when required to do so????? I damn near had to hang on the thing to get it to extend to hook it back up, but that's just my theory and I'm not the one with the 25.1 cert chassis so

Interesting concept to me in regards to running the front full firm and the rears full soft as this is the exact opposite from what I have ever done, well, aside from leaving the left rear soft. How would you control the right rear from tucking up in and causing twist? Without an anti roll boll that is?

Haha, I always assume one is on a budget in this crazy sport of ours. Since the days of old everyone I know runs 90/10 in the front and 50/50 on the back. You got me on the chassis deal....lol...since I have a TRZ back half in the car. However, In your case you would run the Eibach Drag Launch spring kit. I see guys run it with and without the airbag in the r/r. You may also have an issue with the car hooking hard enough to spin the rim inside the tire if you dont have rim screws allowing the unloading of the suspension. Its really hard to say whats best since every car acts differently. As far as the chassis not twisting and the r/r tucking up in the wheel well....A properly braced/welded chassis, upper and lower control arms with good bushings that dont flex just to name a few.......

Oh I'm on a budget all right, it's called; I can't budge-it enough for the car! I'm not running around with a p-headed stocker because I don't want more that's for sure.

I don't think I'm to a point of spinning the tire on the wheel, but I guess I have never thought about it either. I've got good tubular arms, but am quickly realizing the need to upgrade to adjustables.

It'll just take some time to figure this one out, I can't expect perfection on the first outing. Now if I could just figure out what the heck happened with my rich condition!

Thanks Ed!

Yeah I know how you feel. It always feels like the first outing of the year is like starting over...lol...You will get it figured out. I think you would really benefit from an anti roll bar. They arent all that expensive and should cure your problem. Only drawback to them is its tough to run tailpipes with them.

Well, the whole reason for not running the bar is that since I am stuck with my p set up I figured I would try to optimize it for a class it fits. The class doesn't allow for anti roll bars. Even as it looks I won't be participating in that class for several reasons I would still (for a personal challenge) like to see what I can do under the rules for the class, then maybe some day it will work out. Not to mention it's cool as hell to confuse people when they see just how mild it is  There is a particular pair of brothers out at the local track who think they are hot poo running 12.0s and 12.20's with their aluminum headed 347's so I've got to get this bad boy to surpass them with a Ford built 302 also!
