This is where the BIN Hackers and definition junkies discuss the inner workings of the EEC code and hardware. General tuning questions do not go here. Only technical/hardware-specific/code questions and discussions belong here.

need help making something of this...

Post by compudude86 » Wed May 02, 2012 5:20 pm

I have here an EEC-V bin file, (the full 256k) from a KCA3 box with ATAQ0 strategy, out of a 98 ford contour 2.5L V6 ATX. I don't even know where to begin with this file and how to get it translated to the point I can run it in a tuning program like tunerpro, any help would be appreciated!

It's not clear to me whether you want guidance in HOW to translate it yourself, or guidance in how to pay someone to get it done for you.

To get it done for you, send a pm on this forum to sailorbob and/or popsracing. They and maybe others are able to create "def files" from a bin file, which is what you need to tune with tunerpro or with Binary Editor. I'm not aware of their current pricing structure, but it might cost up to $200. If you were to do it for yourself, you might easily spend 200 hours of your time on it; that figure may help you decide how much you would want to pay someone.

To do it yourself, you would need to

1 Learn some 8065 assembly code

2 create a directive file for the 8065 disassembler, which will tell
the disassembler which bytes are code and which are data.

3 Identify the tables and data that you will need for your tuning
(maybe you know this already)

4 identify where in the binary that data lives, its length and its binary scaling.

5 If you are using a hardware device which allows data logging (such as Quarterhorse)
you will need to write some 8065 code that copies any data from internal memory
to the external memory that your hardware device can read.

It IS a lot of work; if you can tell us what you want to do, and what you already have expertise in, then you will likely find guidance on this forum.

If you thought is was pretty simple, and that somebody could just send you what you needed, then I am sorry to disappoint you.

well, I'm not sure what I would want to do with it. I look at it this way, if it would take 200 hours, I see $1 an hour as a good deal. a professional tune is about $200, and with a def I could tune as many times as the chip will take before it won't program anymore, then buy a new chip and program more and more. but moreso, I'm the type that gets joy out of doing something myself. I have done computer coding before, but this has a curve to it.

So really, I'm asking more for help on where to start, what to read, etc. I would like to know where I can get info or pointers on how this stuff works, but if at some point I give up on it, I could spend the money and get it taken care of, but that doesn't do much for me other than clear a hurdle faster.

I know we spoke on the phone, I suggested remo0te tuning as it would be your best option. Disassembly is not just something you jump into...just ask around.

I think you might have me confused with someone else on this one. Ok, feel free to PM me with a price quote to create a definition file.. thanks
