sorry i am a headache! but found my issue

Post by stout95 » Mon Sep 10, 2012 1:44 am

So have had a nightmare and drastic issues with my car one minute it seems to run okay next minute its complete shit!
regardless i work almost 24/7 i had a friend give my a car a tune up. plugs wires etc.
well he,s is not eec savey. and told me yesterday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it sounded like the car was out if time! so i timed it forgot to tell you that! :surprised:
great friend but he,s a usual 80,s trans am long hair carburation guy,!
when he timed the car did not pull the spout and set my timing at 0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
ummmm okay! theres the problem when he told me this my head about folded into 4 peices and i was about to turn into the predator! hahaha
so went to work timing was dead on 0! my headache that i figured was my inexperience in tuning smacked my ass in the face for not double checking. so this evening had car lined out set timing went over plug gap everything i could think of.! car started and bam! idle was at 12.1.11 afr. worked on slopes and offsets and this thing runs like a stock 95. i am thrilled.! i am running 10psi through it now via single 67 trim turbo. and the car has never ever ran this well even at 17psi! through the manual. . i just want to give thanks to decipha and cgrey for the helping hand and answering all my questions. i really appreciate it guys and once i can get a strangle hold on b/e hopefully i can help others in my spot! again thanks!

Its unfortunate that you can't log this kind of thing. But it's also this kind of thing that got Ford to redesign things in DIS/EDIS such that you can't adjust timing mechanically...at least not without installing additional hardware to do it. And the assumption then is if you are doing that, you know what you are doing. I'm sure your headers and exhaust valves appreciate the timing being advanced back up where its supposed to be. I've heard of people accidently driving with the SPOUT pulled (10 degrees advance all the time). I can't imagine driving with an engine near 0 degrees advance.

I remember my engine attempting idle the 1st time I cranked it up in the Ranger. It ran horribly and wouldn't rev no matter how much throttle I gave it. I went to time it, just touched the distributor in the advance direction and it improved. Turns out it was about 20 degrees AFTER TDC. It didn't sound like a normal idle until about 0. And of course at 10 BTDC, it was idling and reving like an engine should.

Ya i was racking my brain. thinking it was all in the tune. but hours and hours of searching could not come up with nothing. it would be nice to have somthing to let you know what the base is as well maybe an aftermarket crank sensor for cars before EDIS . even with a timing light its just never 100 % especially if you have a balancer that has spun or like most the timing placement is never stable and moves around.

this is something i've incorporated in the d.e.c., i havent done any testing with it though as i've had bigger fish to fry but anyway, i have a counter that keeps track of the crankshaft position for any given time, i have an discharge input for cyl1 which the d.e.c. uses to calculate base timing.

this among. tq, hp, and engine response are used to verify if the d.e.c. is in control of ignition timing and if so to make sure the actual advance and demanded advance are accurate, i use this to calculate different types of ignitions but also use it to calculate if timing is being altered from an external source (such as a msd btm or boost referenced spark retard device), all of which are loggable
