E85 fuel tank fox
As I get closer to finishing my build on a 347 with an eaton m112 Iwas considering using e85. My first concern is a stock metal tank. Can I use this or does someone make a plastic factory tank? I would like to have the tank in the original loction. If not what are my choices? I want to use the fuel door fotr the fueling .
thanks Ray

Re: E85 fuel tank fox
Without a signature or details about a vehicle you are doing this work on, I have no clue how to help you.
But your concerns are correct, the metal tank isn't likely to hold up to E85 for long. If it's being used with E10, it's days are probably numbered. Although I believe there is some kind of coating you can mix up and pour into metal gas tanks to coat them from the inside. What I don't know is if those coatings are E85 resistant or not. They've been around for a long time and may predate E85.

Re: E85 fuel tank fox
the stock tank is fine you won't have any issues
most people don't know it but back in the mid 80s (85ish) the US government mandated all vehicles sold in the US must have either a lined or corrosive resistant fuel tank specifically for water sediment and ethanol use, this was part of their emissions and safety kick, it was also in part due to the conversion to running ethanol that was tossed around back then as brazil was completely self dependent and running ethanol as they have been since the 80s, i believe it was the major oil companies that shot that down on the hush way back when, but in any case, just as sure as every vehicle sold in the US after 1979 has a seatbelt i can assure you your tank will be fine with e85 since it was designed for it

Re: E85 fuel tank fox
I guess I'm a little amazed that his vehicle has a metal tank. My 89 Ranger has a plastic tank. I just assumed Ford standardized on plastic tanks as far back as then, so to hear of a vehicle with a metal tank drummed up images of 50s and 60s era trucks with the tank behind the seat.

Re: E85 fuel tank fox
im fairly certain its only a metal external shell with a lined internal tank
Re: E85 fuel tank fox
Sorry about not giving all the info. As stated by decipha It's a 1990 mustang. The % speed is gone and I have plans for an auto tranny now. I want to drag race again and don't react as well to the tree as i used to. The new motor is a stock block, cast crank, I beam rod 347 with a afm b4 cam and tfs high ports. Compression is 9 to 1. I took a blower off of a ford lightning and built adapter plates and a new front cover and snout. I will drop boost to 8# this time around.
The tank is metal with a plastic cover to protect it. I did not know about it being lined. Thanks Decipha.

Re: E85 fuel tank fox
the tank is a steel galvanised inside and out with a internal baffle system made of plastic, i sumped my tank and cut large holes before welding the sump onto the bottem. most steel tanks here in the rust belt of buffalo new york last at the least 10-15 years from salt on the outside.

Re: E85 fuel tank fox
E10 is not going to cause issue with a metal fuel tank. They have been coated for decades, and us folks in the midwest running E10 for about as long.
