Problem reading bin from ECU

Post by Dave2302 » Fri Dec 07, 2012 1:26 pm

Hi Guys,

Moates Burn2 and all the other bits arrived today
So I set about getting the bins from my ECU's.
Cleaned the J3's thoroughly and got 3 bin files from the 3 RUTH ECU's, no problem here except one of the 3 has a totally different bin to the other 2, so I'm presuming that one has been tuned before !!

But tried to get the bins from the 2 EXIT ECU's I have and all I get is rows and rows of :-

00000000: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
00000010: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
00000020: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

etc etc etc etc etc All the way down the file !!

Anyone know what's going on here ??

Couple of things to try. First provide power to the ecu, some USB ports cannot sufficiently power the ecu to do a read. Secondly check that the ecu doesn't need a couple of solder pads near the J3 connector bridging (there's some instructions on this floating around on the 'net).

Thanks Sailorbob,

Will try power and earths on it. I did think about this soldering link, but I can't find the article where I read it, anyone know ?

Decipha, Thanks Buddy, but the EXIT ECU's are 1995 I think the solder in link may be the problem.

Right,

I've got a read on the EXIT ECU's now but each time I read them I get a different bin ??

I've attached 2 or the read files from one of my EXIT ECU's, (which I call EXIT 1), to this post, in case anyone can see why I'm getting different results each time. I didn't bother keeping the bins from my other EXIT ECU, (which I call EXIT 2), as that too gave different results each time ??

TBH I would like to keep using the RUTH ECU's if we can work out the Defs, so the EXITs aren't as important, I just wanted to see what timing and fuelling Ford were running in the EXITs as a comparison to the RUTH figures.

I've also attached the RUTH ECU Bins, all from 1997 RUTH ECU's with the same codes, part numbers etc..............

You will see from these that my 2 RUTH ECU's give me the same bin files, but Matts RUTH gives me a different bin file !!

My car runs very well with Matts RUTH ECU but runs lean as heck with my 2 RUTH ECU's. As all 3 RUTHs should be identical I think Matt's one has been reflashed at some time in its history............What do you guys think ??

For now would I be able to reflash one of my RUTH ECU's with a copy of the bin from Matts ECU, using my Moates Burn 2 with FA and FE interfaces ??

Cheers Dave

These are EEC-V ECUs, with the 104 pin J1 plug aren't they? from the size of the bins you posted, and after looking at them, I suspect you have read only one of the (probably) 2 banks in there. You probably have the bank used for data, and not the one used for code.

Sailorbob knows way more about euro bins than I and will probably step in with some facts more useful than my conjecture.

Yes all EECV.

AFAIK it read all ROM, used adresses 000000 - 03FFFF Which says it will read entire bin, but I'm finding this very thick going atm !!

Well, if it really read all of 000000 - 03FFFF that would make a total of 256KB and all your bins are on;y 32KB. Which software are you using to read the ECU? I suppose if some of the upper address lines are dirty, you could be reading the same 32KB over and over again.

What are you rallying. I did the Scottish rally Championship in 1977. Won the 1 litre class of the Challengers championship, 7th overall in Challengers. Feels like a million years ago.

Using Tuner Pro RT.

The car is a Ford Puma but that's where the similarity ends, it has 4X4 Sierra running gear and 24V V6 Cosworth in it

I'm away now until Thursday with no internet, so will be back then

Makes sure the start address of “000000” and end address of “03FFFF” are set for both the ‘chip’ and ‘buffer’ addressing

Thanks Sailorbob,

Buffer Address was wrong, attached is the full 256k bin from RUTH ECU..............
Let me know what you think.

Anyone able to help create a def file for this then ??

From what I can see, (which is very little atm), the Cal files start at line 2000, am I right ??

The first 0x2000 of each bank is null data.

Any chance of uploading the EXIT bin file?

Hi Sailorbob,

Thanks for reply, will upload both bins from the EXITs, but I couldn't see anything in them they have both come out different ??

I'll also upload Matts RUTH Bin, that one is totaly different to the my 2 RUTHs and the car runs much better on Matts ECU......................I suspect this one has been tuned, it seems to be a different strategy and does not have the Ford Copyright at the end like my 2 RUTHs do...................

I've also run the RUTH No1 bin through TVR's Disassembler, it went through ok but I'm not sure what to do with it next, also not sure what the warned list means ??

What do you think ??

The RUTH bin from Matts ecu is corrupted, probably the J3 connector needs cleaning some more.

The EXIT no 2 ecu has been reflashed with the FILM calibration which uses the ABAT0 strategy.

I'm not familiar with the disassembler you are using so I cannot help with any queries about it.

Sailorbob,

Ahh, Right, thanks for that

I'll try Matts ECU again then, and I'm glad the EXITs made sense to you.

The disassembler is the one on here in this forum by tvrfan a few posts down, I didn't realise they were all different, is there a better one to use ?
Do you have a link ?

I'll get it if so, would be best if we are all singing from the same hymnn sheet LOL

Sailorbob,

Sorry to sound thick, I've not come across FILM as a calibration for the 24V Cosworth, did you mean FIRM ??

That would make more sense to me as there were Ford TSB's about re flashing the EXIT's back in the day

I have looked through them EXITs & they are the ones that look corrupt to me lol!

Got more questions than answers now!

Why is it repetive data at where the calibration file should be ??
Why is there what appears to be drop outs where you have rows of NULL data then suddenly one byte of data then nothing again ??
Why is there no Ford Copyright or file identifaction ??

& why does the bin disassembler refuse to even try to decode it ??!

Same for both EXIT's  .

Thanks for now

I meant FILM, the FIRM calibration is from a 1.3l Fiesta.

The EXIT ecu is a 2 bank ecu (112k) so there's a lot of junk in the 256k bin. The Ford filename and module part number are in there (that's how I knew one of the EXIT ecu's had been reflashed).

Sailorbob,

Aha OK my bad on the FILM.

Should I be using different adressing to read the 2 bank EXITs then ?

Each time I read them I get different results, J3's are now clean as a tanner up a sweeps @rse LOL

I've cleaned the J3 on Matts ECU and it now reads the same as my 2 RUTHs Dohhhh !!

Matts 2nd read attached

Seems I'll have to be a bit more agressive with the J3 ports another time LOL.
If I don't here from you between now and tommorrow, you have a great Christmas, and thanks for all your help so far

yes you should be stopping the read at the end of the 2nd bank, everything after that is just going to be null filler

from what i gather it doesnt look like any of those binarys store the VID block in the same manor the US ecu's do, maybe being in the cross over year range 94-96 obd2 wasn't fully implemented out there?

i see in the binarys

EXIT1 is ABAR0
EXIT2 is ABAT0
RUTH is ATAFF

what is the hardware code on the ecu(s) ?

Hi, and Happy Christmas,

MLF427 on the RUTHs
MLE221 on the EXITs

So I should be using addresses 000000 - 01FFFF for the EXITs is that right ?
Where do you see this in the binaries ? Cos I can't LOL
I think they are both OBDII, the EXIT is 1995 and the RUTH 1997 MY

Thanks Dave

As you now know the EXIT ecu's are 112k 2 bank then use a ‘chip’ addressing start of “000000” and an end of “03FFFF”. For ‘buffer’ addressing you can then use a start of “012000” and an end of “02FFFF”. Once you save the bin you can then use a hex editor to subtract the 0x2000 of junk at 0xE000.

Thanks Sailorbob,

I tried those addresses but when I try to enter the different buffer address the "chip" address above it then alters................

So I don't know what to do now, still trying to get these bin files right.............
Not even close to thinking of definitions yet

Oh well, I thought you could edit the buffer before saving the bin. You'll need to edit the bin after saving (which is all I do anyway).

Okay guys,

I tried pulling the EXIT bin with adressing 012000 - 02FFFF as per Moates FAQ's

Got the file below 120kb instead of 112kb ??

Does this look right to you fellas now ?
Is this what I should be working with ?

The bin is corrupted, at least the first three lines of 16 bytes.

Since you have to use a hex editor to remove the 0x2000 from between the banks you might as well start with the 256k bins you already have to get the 112k bins.

Hi Sailorbob,

A friend came up with these from the 256k files ??

Are these correct ??
I don't know why I can't read these 112k 2 bank bins straight off, but at least if they are right now, then we can progress
