Anyone here currently or ever played with VW tuning?

Post by fogged306 » Fri Feb 14, 2014 6:59 pm

I've got a 00 VW golf with a 1.8t that I just picked up for a daily driver and while reading up on them I came across a bunch of info about how those engines are capable of up to 40-45hp more with just an ECU reflash. But all the chips I see were $500 or more. It's just going to be a commuter car, but why not make it a little more fun to drive if I can. I'm just not spending $500 on a tune. So I'm wondering if anyone knows if there's software similar to the quarterhorse for them. Or anything that I can tune the car with without spending a ton of money. I'm very amateur, but I did get my 408 running pretty decent with the help of this forum so I figure I can probably tinker if there's a user friendly interface. The only reason I'm asking here is because VW forums have very little technical info and google has turned up nothing that isn't either a chip or something with a UI that's way over my head.

friend of mine had an audi with the little 4cyl turbo, before he passed away he wanted me to tune it just to see how peppy we could make it, he passed on before we could get to it and his nephew sold the car shortly thereafter, never did get to mess with it at all

but iirc when i was looking at options for tuning them there were some internal replacement roms just like the older bmw's and what not
