Evap canister retrofit on ancient Mustang

Post by Shaker666 » Thu Apr 10, 2014 1:50 am

It's the little details that makes up the last 1% of a job a complete PITA sometimes. I've been trying to tackle what seems to be the most trivial issues nearing the completion of my EFI conversion on the '71 Mustang. One issue I always had with the old 'Stang when it was carbureted was the fuel smell after it was parked in the garage. Granted, I live in Tucson which gets pretty seriously hot in the summer and that certainly didn't help things, but the car hasn't had a vapor canister for decades. I picked up a new Motorcraft vapor canister for a '96 Crown Vic (since that was the donor vehicle for the EFI harness) and it looks very similar to the Fox canister. The canister has 2 ports on top and aside from the fittings being impossible to find, I was able to grab the stock lines leading to the purge valve and the valve itself, which worked out great in terms of fit and mounting location on the car. After plumbing the whole thing up, I realized that I've got the fuel tank vent plumbed to one port of the canister and a hookup to the purge valve out of the other. Isn't the canister supposed to have a fresh air vent too?!

There has to be a vent open to atmosphere somewhere in the system. On the Crown Vic the vapor line from the fuel tank and the line from the canister purge valve are tee'd together and go to one port of the canister. The other port has the canister vent valve and is open to atmosphere. Connect the fuel tank vent line and the canister purge line together and connect them to one port of the canister and leave the other port open to atmosphere.

Thanks. Now I've just got to find the fittings that will go into the ports!

I've heard that F5AZ-9E629-A is the correct 2 port elbow and the same part number ending with BA is a simple 90* fitting. I took the lines and everything from the donor vehicle, so if I could find these fittings it'd make for a super clean install.
