Laptop recommendation
Planning on using EEC Analyser and Binary editor on my new setup. I'm buying a laptop that will be solely used for tuning what should I be looking for? Lots of 4G ram 2.4 ghz laptops in my price range that I wanna spend, will that do the trick or should I be getting more RAM? The sales people are telling me to not go less than 6G of RAM and to not worry about the processor speed so much but I'm not sure if that's the right way to go. Any advice I could get will greatly be appreciated.

Re: Newbie needs laptop recommendation
im only have 4gb and 1.9ghz i3 cpu using tunerpro and haven't had any issues. depending on the OS you may not be able to utilise more than 4gb anyway.
Re: Newbie needs laptop recommendation
I've got only 2GB of RAM and 1.6 GHz and it runs everything just fine. It also has about 10 hours of useful battery life due to the tiny Intel Atom CPU and it fits in the glovebox quite nicely.

Re: Laptop recommendation
ram and processing juice depends on the OS a large deal too some are hogs and require a pretty hefty amount of juice
i'd recommend no less than 4gb and 2.4ghz
my tuning laptop is a junk ass gateway nv50a, 3ghz processor and 4gb ram, the only issue i have with it is that its a gateway and they can't make stable usb drivers, they also have dumb ass engineers that ground the charging port through the processor heat-sink but that's another discussion
heres a few things that i'd recommend to be aware of or to look out for
1> get a back-lit keyboard, makes life much easier
2> make sure they have an extended battery available for your laptop
3> get a smaller more mobile laptop, anything bigger than 10" is too big for me
4> make sure it has adequate usb ports for your needs
i'd recommend no less than 4gb and 2.4ghz

Re: Laptop recommendation
Duel core or quad core? The clock speeds on the duel cores look faster but I've read that u can't judge with the clock speed anymore? How many USBs to I need? 2x2.0 1x3.0? I'm gonna have a LC-1 and the dongle so I don't wanna buy the wrong one. Sucks to hear about the Windows 8 being like vista, my last laptop I bought was vista and I hated that computer. So the smaller display is ideal for u guys I will look for that. I now know how it feels for people buying a new car bc I get a bit lost in the stores and I see the sales people sucking me in.

Re: Laptop recommendation
You don't need a quad core for datalogging and tuning - in fact a quad core would simply consume more energy and have less battery life. Anything with USB 3.0 is pointless since none of the devices we interface with run at USB 3.0 speeds, but it's becoming more and more common and is backwards compatible with 2.0.
Smaller display is no big deal. When I get back to my lab after datalogging, I plug into a giant 27" display to view and analyze the data.

Re: Laptop recommendation
I am thinking of one of the smaller solid state "laptops". Has anyone tried on of them?
With it being solid state, I was going to mount it in the car by building a mount in or under the glovebox.

Re: Laptop recommendation
SSD is totally worthwhile, but don't know about running Windows on a Gumstix or Raspberry Pi. You want a solid Windows capable machine.MrMustang wrote:I am thinking of one of the smaller solid state "laptops". Has anyone tried on of them?
