Most weekdays, I'm refreshing the EECTuning.org tab in my browser many many times a day just to look for new posts. I don't always have time to read them, so new posts may get opened just to clear the "unread" status from them. Ones I've responded to that have updates, I generally do open to read the update(s).

Weekends, I'm far more spotty. And vacations, I may not check the Internet at all, including email. That's made easier because I don't have a smart phone.

Yup. An absolute POS dumb phone. But if I have anything better, it winds up getting smashed when I crash on the mountain bike trails. If I ever decide to get one, I'll probably just get an unactivated phone just to call 911 if I wreck and hurt myself bad enough I need that.

It varies for me from about 4 times a day down to once a week. I depends on if I'm awaiting some responses for something I posted and or how busy I am at work.

Thanks

I usually poke my head in at least once a week. It used to be a couple of times a day, just been too busy for much internet time lately.

Been reading for hours every day trying to read, learn and retain as much as I can before I get started. Just rebuilt my motor and should go back in the car next week. Received my QH and super dongle a couple weeks ago. This is an amazing forum with so much great information, yet very overwhelming. How much time did you guys spend playing with software before you loaded a tune to your ecm? Did it run your first time? And how long did it take before you had a really good handle on what you're doing?

I started with CalEdit/CalCon back before BE existed. I quickly got tired of its errors and incompleteness and started tuning with TunerPro to access things that simply weren't available in CalEdit OR were not represented correctly. But it took a while of fumbling and trial-n-error to figure out that I simply wasn't seeing the world correctly in CalEdit. And after talking to people on this forum, my suspicions were confirmed. But how long did I study the software before loading a tune? No time. I read the stock tune from my EEC and practiced writing it to the various positions on my TwEECer. Then I started experimenting with the things I had a decent handle on such as Idle RPM, Part Throttle and WOT spark advance. Then I started branching out in the more complex areas like MAF curve, Idle spark, and ISC idle control. Since I maintained a working EGR, I even started tinkering with increased EGR flow to see if it would benefit me in any way by allowing me to increase Spark advance to get better fuel economy.

I don't remember, but I don't recall there being a problem with getting the tunes into the device and having the EEC use it. But it's been so long ago, I don't remember.

There was the initial overwhelming feeling just swimming through massive numbers of settings that I didn't understand and weren't documented hardly at all. So there was a fair amount of experimentation just to see if I could figure out what the settings were doing. Some settings didn't do what I expected well enough to mess with. Others made changes I didn't understand at all initially and required a LOT more trial-n-error and study to wrap my mind around what it was doing and why it did what it did when I experimented.

One of the harder concepts to understand was Injector breakpoint. But the hardest concept for me to understand how to tune was Idle control. You wouldn't believe how many different Idle controls there are that APPEAR contradictory based purely on naming. But once you understand the modes of Idle control and that Idle Control has both an Open Loop and Closed Loop mode (similar to OL and CL fueling), then you start realizing that some functions are only active in OL and others only active in CL. But there was never a comprehensive explanation of idle control for GUFx done. So you are left sifting through the GUFB document to figure it out. When BE was available, I started updating the GUFx defs with comments to help myself remember details I had to learn. I updated it so much that I became the defacto maintainer of it and still am. The GUFx defs for BE have matured a LOT. But they still aren't perfect. I sometimes stumble on entries that have comments I don't like or wish I'd done differently. Sometimes I update them. Sometimes I leave them. TBO, I'm just not as enthusiastic about maintaining them as I used to be.

This is why I am willing to pass the baton to someone else that wants that responsibility. So far, no takers...

I can't thank you enough for taking the time to respond to my questions, and so quickly. I'm looking forward to diving in here very shortly and I'm sure I will have many more questions in the future. Like anything though, I'll do my best to figure it out on my own before being to bothersome.

I usually drop in at least once a week - sometimes more if I m trying to figure something out. Depends on my work load and family demands. I'd love to be able to work on my car more but with two under 2, I just don't have the time.
