Cam distributor sync for Ford FE 390

Post by ironmanisanemic » Tue Dec 09, 2014 11:20 pm

Hello,

I am wondering if anyone out there has any experience putting EFI on a Ford FE motor. I have a CDAN4 computer that i was wanting to use, and this would mean i have to go distributorless. I know i need a cam sync sensor and plug for where the distributor used to be, but for the life of me i cannot find anything for the FE motor. Edelbrock makes a EFI manifold for the FE motor, but they expect you to run there EFI system. Mass-Flo offers a kit for the FE motor, but it runs a custom TFI distributor, and i want to go distributorless. I know if you want to do it with a 351, you need the cam sync sensor out of a 5.0 explorer and a 3.8l windstar to make one frankenstein distributor, does anyone know if there is a combo to do this for the FE motor?

Thank you

I don't know of any for the FE engines, the FE's have their own distributors unlike the 351w/351c/400m etc... which are the same physical dimensions

your best bet would be to start measuring and find what requires the least amount of work to make do, be sure to post your results

Howdy ironman,

I'm running a EEC-V CDAN4 ecu on my stroker 351W and I converted a MSD cam sync plug from a HE signal to a VR signal.

I'm a wannabe shadetree machinist so it wasn't any biggie.

I used a cam and crank position sensor from a '97 4.6 and used a DIY 36-1 tooth crank wheel that I mounted between the balancer and the pulley.

It would be easy for me to convert a distributor to a cam position sensor plug. All I would need is a dist body w/ shaft, a little scape aluminum and a piece of round stock steel, a few Allen bolts, cam sensor and a little time on a lathe and mill.

No biggie. Heck, after building my 414W SEFI w/ EDIS from scratch I can do it to any engine, even a flat head Ford V-8.

Now that would be the sight to see under the hood of a Ford Model A....... A Ford flat head V-8 with Edelbrock heads and intake w/ SEFI and a EDIS ignition system.

Thanks for the info. I have an idea what im going to need to do. Im going to keep my eyes out for a cheap procomp distributor to hack up on the lathe at work, and get a few cam sync distributors for 5.0s and use them as sacrificial lambs. I know there is a difference between the Hall Efect and the Variable Reluctor pickups, what one would i need to use for CDAN4? Also, did the CDAN4 need the EDIS module anymore, or was that integrated with the introduction of OBDII? I also have a CZAJL computer, would that be a better candidate for the swap instead of the CDAN4?

Howdy,

If I can make it to the shop tomorrow I'll take a couple of pics. I'm sick right now ( I think I have e Boli or something..... might be a cold ) but it's nothing fancy.

Ironman,

If you have access to a lathe and a mill you can easily build a cam sensor plug.

For the VR sensor use the one that goes with your ECU. Use one from a '96-'97 V-8 T-bird and Decipha's ZXA5 base tune.
