1993 F150 Lightning electrical /shifting/driveability

Post by BongoBob » Sun Mar 01, 2015 1:29 pm

Greetings all! My 1st post here . I've got some issues with this 1993 Truck .Most important is the cutting out while driving . We have a 396ish w and an e4od with a stall converter both with low mileage I'm using a base tune on a tweecer.I just got over alternator failure , so that is brand new . Here is the deal I think I have a power or ground issue, driving down the road after cold start , runs great almost exactly 15 miles on the way to or from work the trans shifts down then back up then down then the od light comes on the tach goes down and sometimes the mil will come on !! When the mil comes on it will run bad limp mode I guess. I scan it with the snap on solus and get no codes except for the memory failure due to the tweecer.. I've ordered a trans range selector switch for Monday. since it's vintage 1993. Other issues maybe related maybe not surging idle starts at 1100rpm tries to get to normal goes too low and stalls.sometimes driving it will be at 2k rpm and not slow down even when stopped , Most sensors were replaced within 2 years along with the eec. I don't know if I'm fighting the tune or another issue.I've cleaned some of the connectors for the harnesses with good results , here is the kicker if I disconnect power to the eec in any way it will work fine for a day or so. All help greatly appreciated. also new dist cap'rotor wires/dist /module eec relayEtc .Unsure of correct breather tube setup as well. Thanks all Bongo Bob

that sure does sound like a bad mlps

sounds like you might also have some corrupt code, thats pretty common with a tweecer, make sure u have the latest caledit update if thats what your using

Thanks Tons ! After reading the board some I found that the code 511 will not set the check engine lite on. A loss of ignition pulse will , which would explain the tach dropping and the engine light on . However no pip code or anything, the new distributor may be a Chinese reman have to look at the box still have the oe vintage core which only has a missing gear any easy tests .I have a tweecer RT but have seen nothing as far as a dropout of signals from anything. Thanks again . Will report back after new mlps installed .Thanks again Bob

Well I finally got the trans range sensor installed and it's better but not fixed. However only one time in 26 miles did it pop out of lockup and out of overdrive. This time I was able to turn the od right back on with the switch. The tach has stopped crapping out and 90% of the uncommanded gear changes are gone . Also no check engine light .About 20 miles into the trip I noted a huge power loss , then bucking and surging and get this no noise from the tailpipes just a swooshing sound like the mid 80's Ford wagons with the 460engine . Got home it stalled then restarted and it sounded normal. Has a gutted cat on it and a year old 3" dynomax with 2 2.5 tailpipes. I was thinking maybe the muffler failed internally and that's why the problem is when hot . what else could radically change the exhaust sound? Tonite I disconnected the electrical to the egr "just in case" and also disconnected the battery to clear the kam. Also now it shifts early and locks up too early, Found a cracked o2 sensor connector on the sensor side , have replacement here was moist inside cleaned and dried/lubed until the change out tomorrow. The mlps was my last idea on how to fix this tps is set low at .83 volts . Any help would be really great Thanks again Bob
problems *** jumps out of od and lockup**stalling erratic idle , way better could just be low now *and the power loss /surge and no noise from muffler except the whooshing

Reporting back after re tune . All problems solved with a retune of tweecer except the idle . Following decipha's instructions for idle reset . Outstanding document ! Thanks bob
