I've heard a bunch of times that often, Ford PCMs don't have all the hardware to drive all functions. For example, Often, a PCM from a manual trans car will not have the hardware in it to drive an automatic transmission.
I'd like to fond out if my PCM has the hardware to drive IMRC's and Knock sensors. Determining if it can drive IMRCs should be easy; add the wires and connect an IMRC motor, set the IMRC open RPM low like 1000RPM and see if the motor moves when the engine hits the target RPM. But how could I determine if it can use the Knock sensors?

Re: Determining hardware capabilities
I was curious if you ever found this out? I have an MSE3 with RVAF3 that I am wondering if it will run an IMRC solenoid.

Re: Determining hardware capabilities
enable the knock sensor mask and log the voltage, if it stays reporting 1023 then it's missing the knock hardware
same with the imrc, enable it hooked it up and see if it works
Otherwise pop open the case and back trace the pin

Perfect, will check it out when I get things running
