Calcon and wideband AFR readings off by 2 points

Post by 93foxturbo » Tue Jun 07, 2016 12:41 am

Hello everyone. So finally I ended up installing my dataq 194 to log AFR in calcon. I got it all working but the problem is the readings in calcon log are off by 2 points(12.2:1 on innovate lm1 vs 14.5:1 in calcon). My question is- is there a transfer function in caledit or calcon where I can adjust the readings in calcon so that it matches wideband output?

Anyone? I am aware there are such provisions in EA but wondering if it could be accomplished in caledit/calcon?

I'm not ignoring you, I just have no clue how I would get a DataQ to work with CalCon.

Last time I touched CalEdit/Calcon, it didn't have any DataQ support that I was aware of.

Thanks for the reply.
I think it's about time I swap over to EA/BE. Could you/anyone tell me the procedure to get afr logged(with dataq194) if I were to go get EA(registered version)? Last thing I wanna deal with is afr readings issues after buying EA.
Also, I checked out EA site and wanna know what's the purpose of dongle? Do I need to pay for it as well?

I use BE to datalog my QH and Innovate LC1. At one point, I also datalogged using a DataQ, but it went bad years ago so I just log from the Innovate directly. I can say that even though I entered into BE the theoretical transfer for my Innovate's analog output, the DataQ did not datalog perfectly what a serial connection to the Innovate controller was reporting. It was close, but enough off that I had to manually modify the transfer to consistently datalog the DataQ with accurate values. The only way you can do this is to datalog both the DataQ and Innovate at the same time, note the error, and update BE's transfer of the DataQ's feedback values.

Some ask why did I mess with the DataQ at all when I had the ability to datalog the Innovate? At the time, BE didn't yet support talking to the Innovate controller directly. That didn't get added until literally a few months after I bought the DataQ...that was years ago now. I don't regret going that route since it was a good learning experience.

There are a number of things I recall worth note about my Innovate vs DataQ datalogging experience.

First off, the DataQ's ability to be polled was FAR faster than the Innovate controller and the initial start to datalog is also faster. When I only datalogged my TwEECer, QH, or DataQ, the log starts almost immediately. There's little delay between when I hit the START button and when the numbers start updating on the screen with those devices. However the Innovate controller evidently takes some kind of long brutal hand-shaking before BE begins receiving values. When BE starts to datalog the Innovate controller, it takes a good 5-10 seconds before datalogging begins. During this time, BE appears completely unresponsive so something heavy-handed is occurring.

Next, once it starts datalogging the Innovate controller, the values update only about every 150-200ms. Where the QH and DataQ can be polled faster than my laptop (at the time) could poll responsively. I think back when I did those experiments, the best my computer could do was 25ms poll times before it got so boggy I could barely move the mouse over the stop button to get it to stop datalogging. I believe people with more modern computers have found they can go much faster than that...and I'm sure BE has been optimized to not handle datalogging the same way it did in its early days. That said, Innovate serial datalogging is not nearly as fast as the DataQ, but it's good enough. And it is THE value received the controller intended to send you. So I'll take accuracy over speed.

Finally, my Innovate LC1 is a serial device, not USB. My laptop didn't have a serial port. So I had to use a USB-to-RS232 serial adapter (still do). Initially, I was using a cheap Prolific chipset USB-232 adapter. It was horrible. It would drop the connection or get overwhelmed and reset the USB channel and just cause all sorts of problems...and this was at 9600 baud. I replaced it with a name brand IOGear USB-232 adapter and never had a problem with the adapter again. I believe the Innovate LC2 is USB or did I imagine that?

Bottom line, is:
  1. If your WB can be datalogged by BE directly, use that method. Otherwise expect that you may need to mess around with the voltage transfer using a DataQ.
  2. If your WB is serial and not USB, don't use a cheap USB-232 adapter. Use a name brand unit.
  3. If you need split-second datalogging of your WB, DataQ is quite capable of that.

Now today, I believe BE can communicate to at least 1 or 2 other brand WB controllers, not just Innovate. But I have no experience with them. So I can't say how well it performs.

Thanks for the info again.
I am using innovate lm1. It does have serial port as well as analog output port. which port would I need to use to connect it directly to BE? Wouldn't I need serial to USB adapter for that or there are other provisions in BE that I am not aware of?

If you don't have a DataQ, then your options are to datalog it directly (using USB-232 adapter) OR wire the analog output of the WB to your EGR input and datalog it through the EEC.

At the time I built my truck, I needed it to be emissions compliant so I maintained my EGR. So that wasn't an option for me back then. Now that he truck is over 25 years, it no longer requires emission testing in Georgia so I could do whatever I wanted to it today.
