Where do I measure my MAF diameter?

Post by jhine5588 » Mon Aug 15, 2016 7:56 pm

Looking for my MAF transfer curve.

Old part number- E9ZF-12B579-AA (came on the 89 Mustang I purchased)
New part number- E9SF-12B579-AA ('89 Supercoupe/Cougar)

I know the one installed on my LTD (new part number) is off either an 89 Cougar or a 90 Supercoupe because I parted out both of these cars personally. I compared the Supercoupe MAF to the one that was on the Mustang parts car and they visually look identical. The housing diameters are all the same (checked with calipers) and aside from the crack on top of the old sensor (which is the reason I replaced it) and the "Z" rather than the "S" (which IIRC just correlates to the chassis that Ford installed the part in) they look identical. I installed the complete Supercoupe meter.

I'm assuming that the A9L2 bin file has the MAF transfer curve loaded into it for the stock 88-93 Mustang MAF?

I'm also assuming that the old part number was not the correct one for the car! The engine still has 19# injectors after all.

Therefore I'm also assuming that I do not have the correct meter on the car as it is for a Supercoupe with 30# injectors...

I am aware that I can tune the EEC to accept the Supercoupe meter and still run 19# injectors, or even install 30# injectors. The other option is to follow decipha's advise and get a 60# meter so I don't "top out" this one. I'm sure I'm far from actually doing that with stock heads and stock displacement, so getting this Supercoupe meter curve correct is ultimately what I'm after at this point.

Where do I measure the Supercoupe MAF so I can locate it in the drop down menu in decipha's MAF Transfer Curve? Is there a known value for these particular meters floating around on the interwebs? This is my first post, I'm trying to make it a valuable one!

Ok, well it appears that the E9ZF number is the correct part number for an 89 Mustang.

At this point I'm wondering if due to the fact it's a V8 with 19# injectors versus a V6 with 30# injectors if Ford just used the same meters and I should be safe using the 89 Supercoupe MAF meter.

If anyone has any input on this that would be great. I won't bother buying a new, Mustang unit, if the Supercoupe one "won't work" I'll just buy an aftermarket 60# so I won't have to worry in the future.

MAF meters are not rated in "pounds". They're rated in mass-air flow or (grams/second, kilograms/hr, etc...). Some companies sell "recalibrated" MAF sensors that will kinda sorta get your fueling correct if you put in the corresponding injectors. With the ability to actually tune your computer, you don't need that.

Ford sizes the meters to air flow the engine needed, not injector size.

From what I can find, the supercoupe MAF transfer curve is similar to the Mustang GT or Cobra MAF, but not quite the same.

Wait, they read in metric? I thought we won that war!?

The per hour is implied on the "pounds" rating.

Touche!

It seems like a stupid question that I'm asking but I'm just looking for clarification as to if I measure the inlet OD of the MAF, the inlet ID, the OD of the large passage, the OD of the small passage... I guess decipha's drop down menu for the MAF transfer is vague or obsolete with stock meters?

I have been unable to locate the transfer function for the Supercoupe meter, but I do have both EEC's that came out of the 89 Cougar and 89 Supercoupe. I guess I could power one up and pull the calibration with the QH so I have it and share it with the rest of the world...

Does anyone have a buddy with a Supercoupe and a QH? I can try posting on SCCOA too.

What's the catch code on your supercoupe ecu? I'll try and get the maf curve for you.
1989 Ford Bronco:
-393W, Edelbrock Performer RPM heads, ProComp Upper and lower intake, Custom Comp Hyd Roller cam, 10:1 compression,FRPP LU34 34lb injectors, 75mm TB, Pro-M 80mm MAF, equal length short tube headers, 2.5 inch y pipe merged into single 3 inch with hooker aerochamber muffler and no cat, QH w/ BE and EA running U4P0, 4R70W

1995 Ford Mustang GT
-Bone stock minus the QH. 5 Speed. T4M0

Should IM or post the question on decipha's forum. He's a supercoupe aficionado

I wasn't aware. I PM'd him on here as I was confused about a few things on his writeups and he corrected them on his site to simplify things. I'll try to get the catch code today.

A9Z2 is the catch code. This one was from a 90 SC with an auto.
