351 to EEC V camsensor ?

Post by UdoFink » Thu Aug 18, 2016 11:01 am

I just build up an 351W stroker with an Whipple 2.3 blower that I want to run on an EEC V AOL2
For crank sensor I use Explorer balancer and sensor but Exlporer use 3pin hall cam sensor AOL2 use 2wire inductive.
Is there some that fit ? My idee is to use standard distributor cut all thees exept one and install the 4.6 cam sensor in the distributor housing

Thanks for help Udo

Are you stuck using that particular computer? There is an EEC-V that supports the TFI distributor a 351 would have came with. The 1996 F-150 5.8 EEC-V is what you'd need.

Why not just use the 4.6 inductive two wire sensor and make it fit into the Explorer cam sensor housing?

The Explorers came with 2 style cam sensors. I don't know if either of them are what he needs. The older 96-98ish cam sensors were the 1/2 circle type. I don't know what the newer one looks like. I just recall someone discovering that the newer Explorer 5.0Ls had a different cam sensor than the older ones.

The later ones have a single thin tang instead of the half moon.

I have ordered an Explorer cam sensor housing at RockAuto when it is here I will see what is better to fit the cam sensor.
Exlorer cam sensor housing ore 5.8 distributor.
Not sure but I think that the oilpump drive is different 5 and 5.8

The 5.8's oil pump drive is slightly bigger, so you'll have to use the 5.8 distributor.

If you want to use a cam sensor in a 5.8, you need 2 cam sensors. You need 1 from an explorer for the housing, and another from a 3.8l for the shaft. Like stated above the explorer used both VR and hall effect sensors, They also had either the half circle and the small tang. I dont think there is a difference operating wise if you use a vr sensor with the small tang, and the VR sensor with the half round or vice versa. I believe it triggers off of the rising edge and ignores the falling edge so the type of shaft shouldnt matter.

Gowdy,

I built my own from a MSD cam sync plug and a 4.6 cam sensor.

Easy peazy. Works great.

If you can still find the cam sync plugs from msd. They stopped making them from what I've seen.

Howdy,

Yes, MSD no longer makes the cam plug but a regular 351W distributor can be modified as well.

No, thanks. I've already grabbed a couple 3.8 V6 sensors at the junkyard, guess I need to grab an Explorer one as well. I'll figure it out ... if I ever get around to actually doing this!

Remember also, that apart from 1/4" vs 5/16" oil pump shaft, the 5.0L block has a smaller hole in the block than the 5.8L. Plus the Explorer Balancer is for a 50oz imbalance engine not 28oz like the 5.8. We do a custom encoder wheel to press fit onto to a step we machine on the back of an aftermarket 5.8 Balancer for this purpose.
