Aviator MAF Meter / Bolt Pattern Adapter?
Sorry for the abstract thread title.
I was at the wrecking yard yesterday to grab some odds and ends for my pickup. I stumbled upon a 2004 Lincoln Aviator and decided to grab its mass air meter and pigtail.
Questions:
1) Rockauto lists 2000 Lightning's Motorcraft part number as AFLS174RM and 2004 Aviator's Motorcraft part number as AFLS178RM. The part numbers are very close, but not the same. Does the Aviator meter use the same MAF transfer as a Lightning?
2) The Aviator meter's bolt holes are further apart than the studs on my air box. Is there an adapter available to mount this meter to my air box?
3) Lightning meters are regarded as 90mm. Is that internal or external diameter?
Thanks for your time.

Anyone use an Aviator meter?

Re: Aviator MAF Meter / Bolt Pattern Adapter?
Aviator MAF seems closer to the 80mm Lincoln Mark VIII in design.
MAF's are measured inside diameter.
I run a 05-up slot style OEM sensor in a blow-thru setup, and a 80mm stock Mark VIII MAF in a draw-thru. Both turbocharged..
The 80mm MAF has a 90mm adapter for the filter bolted on. Lined right up..

And no, the L maf transfer is not the same as the Avi maf.

Re: Aviator MAF Meter / Bolt Pattern Adapter?
How do you know they are different? Do you have an Aviator transfer table? Can you tell by part numbers?

Re: Aviator MAF Meter / Bolt Pattern Adapter?
Looking closer at my Aviator meter, under the sensor part number it says "AFH80-06E". Does the "80" represent 80mm? "AFH80" possibly stands for Air Flow Housing 80mm, and 06E is the revision?
Where can I find a maf transfer table for this meter?

Re: Aviator MAF Meter / Bolt Pattern Adapter?
I've never heard of Ford's engineering numbers correlating to the product in any meaningful way. Even if your MAF is 80mm, I would think that "80" in the number is more coincidence than intention.
I could be wrong, but I'm just not aware of any examples where customizing the number was made blatant and obvious. If people know of some examples, I'd be interested in hearing about them. I don't mind being wrong. The only one that even comes to mind that you might be able to say was intentional was the COSY EECs used to control Cosworths...and even in that example, "COSY" was not an Engineering number.

Re: Aviator MAF Meter / Bolt Pattern Adapter?
AFH80-6E is a Hitachi number. The idea it is 80mm has merrit based on my experience of other Hitachi meters I've seen.
If no one has the transfer at hand, then it can be found in the bin from the EEC for the application.
COSY is the second catchode, the engineers picking something appropriate. The first catchcode was CARD, no relevance. The third is ANTI, maybe anti lag was front of mind.
The Puma got MUFF and DIVE catchcodes' lol.

Re: Aviator MAF Meter / Bolt Pattern Adapter?
Rockauto shows the same meter was used for 03-05 Aviators, 02-03 4.6 Explorers, and 02-04 4.6 Mountaineers.
Catch codes I've found:
03 Av: VRW5
04 Av: DHG1
05 Av: CZW1
02 Ex: HQK3
03 Ex: JXB1
02 Merc: HMJ4
03 Merc: TNZ2
04 Merc: NXG0
04 Merc 2wd: FZJ3
I can't find bin files for any of those catch codes online. Is there a way to find that bin file besides hooking up to the ecu? Does Ford make their bin files available or are they proprietary?

Re: Aviator MAF Meter / Bolt Pattern Adapter?
Hooking up to the ECU is the time honored method.
Ford published updates for WDS and IDS, so CD's for those systems contain BIN's.
They are named on the disk by strategy, not by catchcode.
See if you can find out the strategy names.
