A9L+Painless project Cleanup

Post by vref » Tue Mar 05, 2024 1:39 pm

I bought a '94 road-course car years ago with an A9L and a Painless harness. It still has the 55mm MAF that the Painless manual maybe more than implies you must use. It's using a '94 TPS which reads 1.5v throttle closed which I gather is out of range for the A9L and I suspect/hope is causing the horrible backfiring I get when decelerating at even moderate RPMs with throttle closed.

I've got a Tweecer and a wideband LM-2 which I think is sufficient for what I'm trying to accomplish. I'm on a budget but I'd like to get rid of the 55mm MAF: I'm looking at the cheap "stock" 70mm parts you can get on Ebay... I guess the trouble there is getting the transfer function? Anyone have thoughts?

The top end is FRPP GT40 Iron Heads, an Explorer Intake, 19Lb injectors, 70MM TB, and a "CAI" tube and filter to the currently 55mm MAF.

I haven't had the Tweecer hooked up to a laptop in years so I don't remember anything useful but I'll have more info soon. I'm trying to get the ball rolling to run the car this year.

Well, it took some effort to get the Tweecer software running under Win10 but I did get it connected. Found that one of my HEGO is reading near 0 and the short term trim is way off on that side. Yes, the car is staying in "Part Throttle" at idle.

Unfortunately the numbers I'm getting are more than a little suspect. RPM is coming in at some random multiple of actual. A few times it was supposedly idling around 7,000RPM. A few starts/reconnects later is was reading around 16 RPM (Like. 6 more than 10.) And it would go up and down with the actual engine RPM but multiplied or divided by some factor. The car is still running normally.

It didn't do this the last time I used it. Most of the numbers look plausible but it's not confidence inspiring that at least one of them is wrong and not even wrong the same way between connections. The TPS number also appeared to change and not match what I'm measuring at the connector. Not sure if anyone has seen and overcome this.

I suppose if anyone ever comes searching, it looks like the weird numbers I was seeing in CalCon were because the Tweecer hardware has to be aligned with CalCon about which data to send back. You must write/flash the Tweecer with your updated Datalog Payload configuration using CalEdit.

The Tweecer can be finicky for data logging. And Caledit when writing to the Tweecer. Make sure the progress bar for the flash does not pause while writing. Car runs when this happens to me, but I think the tune gets corrupted, and datalogs do not look right. (I always get the "complete" message, even after the pause)

I have a routine now when updating my car to avoid the above. (key off, no programs open on laptop)
1 plug in usb cable to laptop.
2 Open Caledit, and open your tune,
3 turn on ignition,
4 Count to 10, and than hit "write tweecer".
This is probably known info, and documented somewhere... lol

Getting a maf curve dialed in is easy in your case, with stock injectors. Even if the MAF does not come with a transfer sheet. Get the new MAF dialed in before upgrading the injectors.
Yea, the TPS volts are whacked, has the sensor been 'drilled' to make it adjustable? (its totally unnecessary to drill these) This is the first thing you have to address. May just want to put a new TPS on, for the correct model year.

Once I figured out what was going on, it seems fine. I didn't realize you have to flash changes even if you just want to datalog.

I've got an Edelbrock 70mm TB on it. There's a flat blade that engages the TPS. I twisted it a little bit (bending it), put the sensor back on and fired up logging and it's showing .88 -- I twisted the sensor the tiny bit that the screws allow and it's .98 - Boom. Computer now detects idle state and no popping on decel. I'm happy with that.
