Why can't I read the eec? I searched

Post by teal_94gt » Sat Dec 18, 2004 6:02 pm

All my software is installed on the laptop, I have the key turned to the on position without the car running, and it will not read the eec. I have cleaned the j3 port with alcohol and simple green using a pencil earaser. Today I used a razor blade softly to remove all the silicone and it still will not read the eec. What am I doing wrong, I have cleaned everything throughly. The laptop recognized the tweecer without it in the car so I believe that it is working, just can't read the eec or load anything in. Is there someone I can call or what? Thanks, Justin

I read somewhere that on some of the EEC's the Tweecer will side onto the pins too far. The fix was to cut a piece of cardboard between the Tweecer and the EEC when you push it on. Then secure the Tweecer with a strip of tape. I don't remember for sure if your problem is the one that was caused by that, but it's worth a try. I did that to mine just for good measure and havent had any problems.

Also, when you turn your key on, be sure to wait for at least 5 seconds before you try to read or write. That's to give time for the proper drivers to be loaded up.

Yeah I have a pice of cardboard cut for it and that did not change anything. I took off the case and it is going on far enough to me, I have moved it further up so it was barely touching and that did not do anything either. Would I need to talk to Mike Glover on this one? Thanks, Justin

That would be my next suggestion unless someone else has an idea. We've just exhausted my knowledge of Tweecer trouble shooting at this point.

Get some green Scotchbrite and clean Both sides of the J-3 until you can just see a hint of Copper.

Ok, I tried some 0000 steel wool and that helped the look of the j3 connector some but it still feels kind of smooth. This did not change anything either. So just use scotchbrite pads until I can see copper and that's it? Thanks, Justin

OK, the scotchbrite pads really did not do anything. I had to continue to use the razor blade and scrape away until I barely noticed copper while doing the scotchbrite pad rubbing in between. Now you can see copper and there is still no change I can not read the eec. What am I doing wrong? Thanks, Justin

you said the lap top saw the TWEECER before you put it in the car. can you read the TWEECER with it installed and not the EEC? Just making sure I understand the problem.

It says, "Failed to connect." Fans and fuel pump run all the time of positions 1-4 but not on 5. When I received the tweecer I hooked it up to the laptop through the usb cable and it recognized the tweecer just fine, so I know that it works fine and the laptop recognizes it. What am I missing or what did I wreck in my install process? Thanks, Justin

I am not sure if I can read the tweecer while in the car, I have not tried. I could not write to the tweecer so I would assume not, but we all know what assume means. I will find out though. Thanks, Justin

Ok, this morning I did what you told me Raymond. Hooked up the usb cable and turned the key on. Went to device manager and looked under the USB part, and the Tweecer does show up and it says that the device is working properly. Under device usage exits in all hardware profiles is checked, disable in this hardware profile is not checked. When the cable is unplugged and I go back to check there is nothing for the tweecer under the USB section. This means the tweecer and laptop are ok right? Thanks again for everyones time! Justin

Yes it appears that the driver is loading properly. So when you click read tweecer you get errors right ? Or if you click read eec you get errors right ? What happens if you try to do a write tweecer ?
Thanks,

Yes, everything is failed to connect. Mike Glover told me it's a driver problem. My laptlop is using windows 98. Does a driver problem mean that I have to reload in the software, or I need to reinstall the USB card? I find this hard to understand because the computer recognizes the tweecer under the device manager. I can try another laptop but it has windows xp on it. Mike said that xp and millenium can possibly cause problems with the driver. Anyone again? Thanks, Justin

Ok, I have tried to install the sofware on a different laptop one that used windows xp, and when I go to install the driver, it does not recognize any of the cal edit software that I installed before and tries to search the internet for the software. I have tried to delete the software off the other laptop(windows 98), and reinstall, but I am not having success with that either to recognize the tweecer driver now. Can someone give me a step-by-step process of what I need to install first and how to get the tweecer driver to work properly. The instructions in the manual are different than what comes up on the screen on what to do. Thanks again, Justin

This sounds like the exact same issue I am going through right now. I know this is an old thread, but did you ever get this figured out? Thanks.

I'm having the same EXACT issue:

Tweecer off the car connected to laptop reads and writes fine.

Connect EEC to it off vehicle and it reads and writes fine.

Connect Tweecer and EEC to the car, and it suddenly doesn't read the device (USB 'unknown device'). Gives me a 'failed to connect'. Can't read, write, or datalog (no green light on calcon).

One post above says its a laptop issue. If it is, I'll reformat windows and see if it helps. When hooked up, the EEC def reads the tune that I flashed in the tweecer as I did an antitheft version and the car didn't run when switched there. I cleaned the hell out of the EEC so it has to be getting a good connection.

Can ANYONE help????? Please??????

Details: A9L, all current programs off of tweecer site, Windows XP Pro, 91LX 5.0, let me know if you need other details...

I was having what sounds to be a similar problem on my truck, '94 Lightning, C3P2 eec. My probelm was that it wouldn't read the eec correctly, came up with a really strange set of values and would not load a file to the eec. I was able to read the tweecer and write to the tweecer but it wouldn't load the file to the eec. I finally took it all back out and re-routed the cables and re-installed it and now it works. It seems the cables were pulling against the tweecer and causing it to not make a good connection. All working now.

Okay... I got your PM Teal94, so I'll try to shed some insight here. What I see going on is that there IS a connection issue when the TwEECer is plugged into the EEC. I know this has been beaten to death, but you NEED to make SURE that the connections on the EEC... ALL of them are perfectly cleaned off. Once you are certain that they are all very clean and all of the crap is off of them that was originally covering them, do these things.

You need to "format" your TwEECer before you can use it... the directions on this aren't very clear and only mentioned lightly in one part of the directions if I remember correctly. Once you have verified that the driver is working properly (in other words, the computer recognizes the device when plugged in) and CalEdit and CalCon see it when the applications are opened. So once you know that your TwEECer works when it's plugged into the USB by itself... open up CalEdit, go to the Utilities tab, at the bottom, select "Four 2 Bank Programs", then click "Config Banks". It will then tell you that you need to power off your TwEECer before the changes will take effect. Then you want to unplug the USB cable, click OK on the screen, wait a few seconds, then plug it back in. Once you have verified that it works again (by hearing the USB device sound or however you verify that it's there), go to your car, plug the TwEECer into the J3 port, make sure it's plugged in correctly and completely, plug the USB cable into your laptop, key the car on, and you should hear the USB connect sound again on your laptop... make sure you wait about 10 seconds or maybe even longer depending on how long your PC takes to load up the drivers and recognize everything (mine is almost instantaneous, but everyones laptop is different), then with the car still keyed on, click the "Ford" blue oval on the top of the screen to read the EEC. Set your strategy and bank count properly, and you should be on your way.

Let me know how it goes. Good luck!

I don't if anyone else has seen this, but I just reloaded TwEECer last week from Mike's site and I noticed the Ford oval is scratched out. I wonder if Ford "said something" to Mike about the use of their logo?

OK, so for people that have the issue I was having, I finally got it corrected:

E-mailed Mike Glover and he said it sounded like it was a tweecer from 2002. He said there was an issue with the 2002 boards and needed a jumper on the board and a firmware update. The 2002 boards have a green EEC connector while others are blue (i think). I shipped it off to him and received it back in three days! Works perfect now.

Thanks Mike, now THAT is someone who stands behind his product!!! Time to start tuning my 91 Notch........

I'm having very similar problems. For about 2-3 months I could read/write/datalog just fine. Then, all of a sudden, I couldn't communicate with the tweecer what so ever. I cleaned J3, completely removed all tweecer files and BDE files, re-installed, tried different lap top, completely reformated hard drive, re-installed drivers, tried different switch positions, tried reading/writing with tweecer disconected from eec, etc........etc..
Result........same damn 12345678 right after the Board Rev on the bottom right hand corner on the cal edit screen.

Talked to mike again today and he said it might be that my usb chip died.
My lap top will recognize that something is on the usb line when it's (usb line) connected to the tweecer. Even recognizes it turning off and on when tweecer is in EEC and key is turned on. It just won't read/write or read EEC. I just sent it in to have it looked at so I'll keep everyone posted. Hopefully I can get it back for this weekend.........there's vettes to kill

Here's the latest with my "can't read/write". Just got of the phone with mike and he said that my EEC chip (something like that) was scrambled in the tweecer. So, the reflashed it and all is well. That means I'll have it for the weekend!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks mike
