First one looks kind of bad.
Oops, I would not trust that one for the 7000-8000 rpm and HP level that I am sure that you will be turning/running.........
twinturbostang wrote: I took all the stuff to a machine guy. He said the crank might actually be salvageable, but I'm not going to risk it.
The crank "may be" able to be salvaged. A good machine shop can nitride (spelling) the crank after it has been turned etc....

But I am like you I would just get another crank & be done with it...
twinturbostang wrote: He also said the cam bearing surfaces are fine. I might get a second opinion on that. But he does all the Jap OHC engines (Supras, 3000GT's, etc.), plus motorcycle heads. *shrug* He didn't mic them though, so that might show they are out of spec. That would really tell if they need to be redone.
Yes when he mic's them that will help determine what to do... I have seen some that have been worse but they were not in high hp/rpm engines....

I would also seek a secound opinion........
twinturbostang wrote: Got some pricing though, so the next thing to do is figure out what I'm going to do. Well, actually first thing to do is sell my '91 coupe. That will be hapening pretty soon now.
Have you decided what internals you are going to run yet? Steel crank, billet rods etc.? Stroker? Where did you end up getting the best pricing from?

Haven't torn apart the pass head yet. Have to do that and see how the bearing surfaces look there. It does worry me though. I don't like to see that kind of scorring. The guy said it would be fine. I guess I should trust his opinion, since he does these kind of things all the time. But personally, I don't want that in my engine!

Looks like I will be doing a 4340 forged stroker crank (3.750" stroke), Oliver billet I-beam rods, and CP forged pistons. Rad gave me some pretty good prices through VT Engines. Probably will be going that route. Haven't decided yet on the rotating assembly or shortblock though. Looks like either way I'll end up using my block though, cause VT doesn't have any cores right now. So if I do a shortblock from them, I ship them my block, they machine it, and then assemble everything.

With the above shortblock, this thing will be bullet proof to 1400 HP!!

I also received my McLeod twin disk clutch w/ aluminum flywheel. Haven't taken pictures of it yet though. As soon as I get my AJE k-member and a-arms, I can start putting stuff on the car. Also to purchase... Lakewood bellhousing, aluminum driveshaft, MM caster/camber plates, Tokico Illumina adjustable struts/shocks, plus the rear axle build up, etc. Basically more parts than you can shake a money clip at! :)

Brian,

I have not been on the forum for a while and just saw the pictures.

Very very nice............ 8) Billet rods and all...........

Which transmision did you get from MMR? I am going to need one shortly and was just wondering if that is the TKO-900 that they sell.

Thanks,
Dale

Yep, it's the TKO 900. Nothing else will do for the kind of power I'm looking to make.

I've got some pictures of the clutch that I have to upload to my website. Also on the way to me right now are my lower control arms, Tokico Illumina 5 way adjustable drag struts/shocks, AJE tubular k-member and a-arms, remote oil filter kit, and aluminum driveshaft. :)

Still to order... bellhousing, C/C plates, battery box, quadrant, etc. Oh, and full axle buildup. I'm running out of money though! :(

Yeah, I don't like to think about how much $$'s I'll have in it... JUST to get it running n/a! The turbo kit is a whole other story! lol Of course, when it rolls out of the garage for the first time, it will be bullet proof in every aspect. Only thing really left to do to it then will be to install the cage, add a fuel system and put a pair of hair dryers on it! :)

Ok, you asked for it. So here ya go. A bunch of pictures of the clutch. Had to take pictures of all the parts cause the thing is just badass!

Oh, a little FYI. The aluminum flywheel is more than enough to offset the weight of the floater plate and extra disk. Entire assembly is 5lbs lighter than the stock setup, which should be great news for my high revving modular engine. :) On to the pics (hope you got a fast internet connection :D )

Brian,

Very very nice..... 8) I like it very much.

How much RWHP will this clutch setup hold? I am going to change from my Spec setup to one of these, I think, if it will hold.

I think just about everything in this thread comes with a big price tag!

But you know the saying.... Speed costs, how fast do you want to spend?

BTW, I had a twin disk in my last car, and it worked great for both clamping power at the track, and nice streetable aspects for around town driving. It was a different style than this one though. It was a Long Style (3 finger) design, whereas this one is the conventional diaphram design. I talked to Mark @ MMR today about it and he said he doesn't think they've made any of the 3 finger style in a while. This must be the norm now. Anyways, it should work great. I've got a few pictures of my old clutch here, for comparison: http://www.twinturbostang.com/pictures/drivetrain/

lol Not a whole lot. I really haven't had a chance to work on it at all lately. Been busy working overtime at work, and doing stuff on the house, etc. Also still waiting on parts. I've got a set of Tokico Illumina 5-way adjustable struts and shocks. The rear shocks are for sale though, because they won't fit with my rear coil-over kit. I'm going to get a set of Lakewood 50/50's instead. Also got a Motorsport aluminum driveshaft and an AJE tubular k-member and a-arms. Still waiting on an oil filter relocation kit though. This will be necessary when I do the turbos, so I figured I'd get it now to make my life easier later on. Also still need to get a bell housing, caster/camber plates, AND build the whole rear axle! lol It never ends....

Hey have you got any pictures of the rear coil-overs? I think that I am going to go with Kevins rear suspension on mine as they seem to be holding up on a few big inch strokers running in the 9 sec. zone..... :P

Brian,

Those are some high quality parts you have there, I likey!!!!!!! Are the Tokico struts/shocks the 5 way adjustable ones? They look like it from the pictiures. Also the lower control arms are almost like the ones that Kevin makes, they should work very well. The ones that Kevin recommended for me have the spherical ends on both ends of the controls arms along with 5/8" diameter bolts.

I had to go get a roll of paper towels at the coffee bar as I have now drooled all over my drawings & vessel calculations.........

Yes, the Tokico's are the 5-way adjustable Illumina's, front ones being the drag version. Actually, as it turns out, I have to sell the rear shocks. They do not work with my rear coil-overs due to a larger diameter shock body. Didn't know that before I got them though. So I'm trying to sell those and buy a set of Lakewood's (which do work) instead. Or if someone wants to do a partial trade, let me know! I do get to still keep the adjustable front struts though. And having those adjustable is most important I think for balancing street manors and "hook"-ability at the track. So I'm glad those work ok with my front coil-overs.

As for the rear control arms, you need to have at least one joint that is stiff, otherwise the axle is free to flop all over the place (side to side). So if you have heim joints on both ends, you need to use a panhard bar to keep the axle in place. Well, if your upper control arms are still stiff on one end, then that should be ok. But if you've got heim's on all joints, your car will drive like it's drunk. :) With the MMR control arms, they use solid bushings at the axle joints, and heim connections at the chassis joints. This way there is no bind in the axle travel (or at least minimized as much as possible), but still positively locates the axle.
I had to go get a roll of paper towels at the coffee bar as I have now drooled all over my drawings & vessel calculations.........
:D I've got another small part to take a picture of also, that you'll like. ;)

Oh, I've been around. Doing this and that. My wife's having a baby next week, so as you can imagine, things are pretty hectic right now! :) Trying to at least get the Cobra driveable very soon though. So we'll what happens.

I see we have some new colors here. I don't think I've been to that other eec-tuning site Dale. Too much to keep up with these days. Fill me in on that crank trigger. What's it going in? Looks like a custom job for a 5.0L engine. Sorry, I can't remember what you were working on now. I thought you had a mod motor car, but maybe you sold it?
